Default Six or 12Volt Distributor

How To tell if you have a 6volt or 12Volt coil? I have several unmarked coils and would like to know how to identify them. Using a Ohm meter I can determine what the Ohms are, however, what about the 6 or 12 Volts. Thanks,
Bob

Some are all the same 6 or 12 the 12 just uses a resistor.
A typical early ford uses a 6 volt positive ground coil with approx .6-.7 ohms primary and a .6-.7 ohm resistor for a total resistance of 1.2-1.5 ohms in the primary circuit...

Once a coil has been ran positive ground it wont work very well in a negative ground system based on residual magnetic fields in the center steel core.....

Later model 6 volt and 12 volt coils were approx 2.0 ohms and ran with a 6 volt, needed a resistor to run with 12 volts..........
