Default Guide coat color ??

As I have just finished after numerous hours of sanding and lightly applying some bondo at some places and some places and followed by 3 layers of sandable primers on my 4 door.
I continue with PPG concept ( maroon / Black ) awful expensive paint by the way.

What do guy's advise for a colour to guide coat ??? and how thick should I spray this . Just a mist ?? Or just cover with a light coat to practically cover the grey primer ? ( black primer or dye for was not available here )

Thanks,

Gerard

I use black when I use gray primer and just mist on a light coat so when I block sand low spots show. I start with 180 grit and work down then spray on more primer.

I always used a red oxide primer, for a guide coat, over gray primer. Just mist in on. Some guys use paint, I always found that it clogged the sandpaper more than primer.

Gerard I would get an aerosol can of black lacquer & dust on a very thin transparent coat.
Canadian tire has it in the hardware dept., by Rustoleum corp, called "Specialty Lacquer" in a green can, bar code#20066 16901.
**Don't buy anything that says enamel.
Enamel dries slower, plugs the paper and in the event that some enamel stays on the car (in a crack or crevice) it could possibly wrinkle or lift under the new paint.
Be sure to sand the primer as thin as possible at your edges...like door edges and especially the hood hinge area to avoid easy chipping.
Someone (Marco?) wrote an article about filing (not filling) the hood hinge joints to eliminate all primer where it pivots.
Less is more.

Thank you all for the advice guy's, will follow up on that. I was a bit concerned that the ordinary rattle can paint would cause he final coat to chip ( final coat is Concept acrylic Urethane )

You may be thinking a guide coat is a full coat.

It is not, just a mist of black rattle can will do.It sands off instantly and only stays in low spots, which obv needs more work before topcoating.

Pooch is right.
When ALL the guidecoat is sanded off, the panel is flat...theoretically.
How fine are you sanding? and are you using an epoxy seal coat just before the colour?

Also Gerard... is Concept paint or the reducer available in your area? I understand it's done with in Canada and many of the states.

Hi Graig , yes you are right in Canada the epoxy paint's are not available over the counter anymore. But as you may know Creston is direct at the border with US and there is a supplier in Sandpoint who ships the stuff direct to a shipping address I have in Porthill.I sanded the car first with 180 grid did some bondo here and there ( I used less 1/2 quart for the whole car ) then 1 coat epoxy primer I then continued with omni mp 802 , 3 coats with light sanding in between. Tomorrow I give the bird a guide coat and start block sanding again. Hell of a job by the way.

I use Krylon Red Oxide Primer or it may be called Krylon Brown Sandable Primer. Dries quick and well not clog the paper. Just mist it on. You do not have to have full coverage, just a mist. It will really jump out to you where the low spots are when you start to sand.

That is what we use. I was hesitant to say anything about it for fear that someone would complain about something else to buy.

I will say that I am not in favor of applying any type of 1K type product (spray primer in a can) under a 2K primer simply for fear of contamination and adhesion issues surfacing later. I realize there are many things done (like using lacquer thinner mixed with urethane paint) that people here feel is OK, but it just isn't for me. With Paint & Materials costs around $1,000.00, skimping on $35 can of guidecoat to save $20 is foolish.

I'll add my vote for 3M's Dry Guide coat. It is black, cheap, and when used over PPG's K-36 is the cat's meow! Gar Williams
