Default The “978” newsletter dedicated to the 1940 mercury convertible seda

I bought my 40MERC Convertible Sedan 1956 and sold it that year as my Daddy died. (Please see previous eV-8 Times articles on my car.) She came home 61 years to the day after Daddy died. Golly I’m excited!!

A former member of our NVRG club, Steve Dawkins owned a maroon 40 Merc fordor convertible sedan. Steve later retired, his 40Merc went to Canada. In his time he created a bulletin entitled THE “978” NEWSLETTER DEDICATED TO THE 1940 MERCURY CONVERTIBLE SEDAN. “987” is the number of 40 Mercury 99a’s built. (Later we find that Ford of Canada built 77 more of the 99a’s. He no longer has any of his “987” interesting and informative bulletins. We know of about 30+ of these exciting cars. Got one??

I then discovered that Dan Krehbiel<[email protected]>; 39/41 Mercury advisory Panel, has an incomplete set of them which he kindly shared with me. Anyone have copies of these interesting bulletins? I’d like to build a complete set and share then with other 40MERC CS owners or any one interested. Please see if you have a complete set of these fab articles in your library?

Sure is an interesting project. Time permitting a I hope to see if I can put together a group on the 40MERC CS for info and chat.

Best wishes,

Clem Clement

Hi Clem,

I don’t have any articles, but I just purchased a convertible sedan that has been in storage for 49 years. I would be interested in a set if you decide to sell them. I’m sure they would be a great help as I put this car back together.

can do. These are great cars. Rare as well. I'm hoping this thread will bring the rest of the 987 bulletin If not, I can write to the members I have on the list.

We have #971 and my dad has had it for almost 50 years, and I believe and good friends cousin down in Tampa has one, not sure as he passed away a year or so, not sure what happened to the car? I also would be interested in this project/set.

Thanks in advanced.

Its been a while since I looked but it has the Body# on the firewall its like 99A-760971 (or 09A and the designation for the body type then 971) or something to that effect. Next time I am over at my dads I will shoot a picture of it. IF it helps any, I know many years back that one was totaled in an accident, it was being trailered down here to Florida for a car show and the trailer flipped and rolled the car. It wound up in a friends junk yard in Gainesville FL, not sure IF my dad was able to get the number from it but will check. I do know we have a picture if it somewhere. SO I can personally vouch for one no longer in existence.

I'm not as "up" on the 40 Merc's as I am the 39's, according to Van Pelt's you're engine was the 71,463 rd engine in the sequence (Starting 101,701 Ending 257,100) out of a total of 155,399 (there about) so you are just slightly shy of "middle" of the pack. Not knowing the month of release for the40's I would guess spring to early summer as a production date. IF you're glass is still "bugged" that should be a pretty good indicator of month of production. IF you have "bugged" glass...at that point who knows as to the exact day of the month???

Thanks. Are you guys thinking the last three numbers of the plate number are the body #?

I'm guessing my glass and bugs are new. I'll check what they are and report back.
