Default 8BA Rods in a '41 Merc Block

Hi all,

My '41 Merc block cleaned at .030. I have a set of 8BA rods that I would like to use with a 4" Merc crank. Does this sound like it will work?

Thanks!

That is the combo that works - go for it.

Great! I didn't know if the extra stroke on the crank would cause the connecting rod studs to hit the case.

The Merc pistons have the wrist pins higher in the piston to make up for the stroke. What pistons are you using??
The original pistons will not work

I'm actually shopping for some .030 Merc. pistons. I have a set of Fords and like you say, they will not work.

That's a 99A block and we used them at Danbury bored to 3 5/16. You can get some nice 3 ring pistons from Egge.

Egge’s pistons for the 49-53 Mercury crankshafts are their L-991 which are 4 ring types.....these are what we stock under the Ford EAC-6108 part number. I’d have to check with Egge to see if they make them in a 3 ring version. The factory original pistons were 4 ring.

I have Egge 3 ring pistons in my engine with a 4" stroke. I wish I had known about the metric rings when I built mine.

I don't think the metric rings are available in the Egge 3 ring pistons, However they may be available in the 3 5/16 .020 and 030 pistons, FYI I've been using the Egge 3 ring pistons since the Late 80's in fact there is a pic of one in my book. (92)

Great. I'll give Egge a call tomorrow. Is there a source for 99A head gaskets or should I just use a general 59A gasket?

It's OK to run a 4 ring piston with 3 rings. Just leave that superfluous bottom groove empty. That lower oil ring is not needed with modern three piece oil rings.

I can confirm this. I left the bottom rings off the last engine I did and it runs just fine. I did, however, have the entire assembly balanced to account for the lighter piston assemblies.

You may need one of the large bore head gaskets.

So, I'm working on the Merc. crank and I need the plugs for the throws. They are 5/8's. Can anyone recommend a source?

Thanks!

Egge does not offer metric ring packs. Ross or Wisco do. Others may as well, but I only called those three.
