I went shopping for anti freeze, the concentrate, not the 50/50 mix.

Prestone yellow per gallon.

I use Sierra as it is pet friendly, therefore the cost is immaterial.

Just had store brand Catsup, for 1/2 the price of Major Brands, can't tell the difference!
Almost ALL Catsups have the same taste, NOBODY wants an "OFF THE WALL" flavor!

Just got 3 gallons of Prestone from Wallyworld.
Was surprised to see that it raises the polling point of water.

YES, it does. With 50/50 Antifreeze & a 10 Lb pressure system, it won't boil until 232 Degrees.

Fun mixing up degrees F and degrees C. A mole of a non electrolyte in water will raise the BP .52C, but ethylene glycohl is an electrolyte so it raises the BP much higher.

I've always heard that moles can become cancerous and therefore should be removed by a trained physician. Not what I want in my coolant.

Propylene glycol has replaced ethylene glycol in most antifreezes..its non toxic...and lower cost.Funny I dont see the lower cost part.

And with all the fetishes that the A crowd has, how come no one has mentioned the TYPE of water? You know, purified water, de-ionized water, heavy water, muddy water, distilled water, rain water, anything BUT what we have readily available, tap water.

Re water, depends on where you live. In Portland Ore. I only use Bull Run water, pure mountain snow/rain water. LOL

I go to the junkyard with a clean barrel and a pump.I drop the hose into the top six inches of green in their tank,and turn it on.I do it on mondays when it has settled for a day or so.I use that in my A's and any old gas equipment or trucks around.I don't use it in anything modern or with wet sleeved diesel engines.While Sierra is fine for gas engines,I had a very bad experience with it in the lats 80's with a Cummins truck engine.When I did the engine over I figured I would be a good doobie and use Serria.In 10 months,just over 100,000 miles,I had two cylinder liners pinhole.At the base of the liner the coolant always boils away from combustion heat,the Sierra attacked the liner metal.This was common on those engines,but at 4-500,000,not at 100,000.Not only did I have to pay a lot for the Sierra,I got to go my engine again at less than 1/4 of it's expected time.

Heres what i've heard... Antfreeze becomes acidic after long use, your coolant system then becomes a battery and eats your metal components. Worse with aluminum. Simple and cheap preventive maintenance to buy 50/50 mixed antifreeze and replace every 5 or 6 years. Drop one probe of a DVOM into the radiator coolant while grounding the other probe to the engine block. If you get more than .2v it's time to replace.
