You need to pull a vacuum at least for the initial charge. It gets rid of moisture and other contaminants in the system. It's not hard to do. At Ken's suggestion, I bought a vacuum pump from HF, really inexpensive. It runs off my shop air.

Besides the fact that pulling a vacuum and then holding it for 30 minutes will find any and all leaks you have in the system, thereby saving you the cost (refrigerant) of having to charge it all over again.
