Not rare...Millions upon millions made...Used on Model T's only...Not sure of the number but about 16 or so on each Model T.

Not sure of the terminology used for the assembly.

Someone will chime in on the rest I hope.

I am no expert, but model T’s had a magneto built into their flywheel assembly as part of their ignition system (could run it off battery or mag depending on the year, early I believe was only mag). Here’s a link to more info

YES, I was YOUNG, once & we played with those things, which were QUITE common. I was "told" that they came from inside a Model T coil box????
Also played with HOOPS & PADDLES. The HOOPS were the metal bands from wooden wheel hubs.

They are used on the flywheel of a model T in conjunction with a set of coils to make a magneto.

I have one hanging on my antique tool board. I think I paid a dollar for it.

NOW I understand why they're so COMMON & why Chief thought the Model A was "THE CAR OF THE FUTURE", when compared to the Model Ts CRUDE COMPLEXITY!!!
He learned many of his SKILLS, working on Model Ts, but HATED them! He said, "Model Ts had poor steering, BAD "brakes", didn't go very fast & were a CANTANKEROUS BITCH, to get started up"!!!!
I once asked an Old Mechanic, "Why you foolin' around with a Compass by the Bell Housing"?????----"When I get this danged thing FIRED up, I wanna' drive to the NORTH side of town"---

After the last thread I posted you would certainly be a person we should interview of your life's story. However I don't know if there is enough paper left in the world or recording tape. to take down your life's story. Maybe you could start writing your life's story for us Bill. Maybe a publisher could take and print all your Ford Barn responses and get rich selling it!

No, no, no, it was attached to the Model T rear axle to pick up the parts that fell off the car!

There are a lot of community colleges, local libraries, local historical societies and State Universities in California that have oral history projects. They encourage students to interview older residents of their community. There are also local newspapers (although many are going out of business) that often have a columnist who interviews older residents and publish stories.

Of course, we now have You Tube and blogs where people can post their experiences in video or written form.

By the way, I also found one of those magnets in my grandfather's garage in the 1940's and we used to play with it. Never knew what it was either.

A properly model T will start easily even in cold weather. The seller can keep his T magnet. They are not hard to find.

16 per car and 15,000,000 Model Ts built=240,000,000 of these made without considering extras for replacements. That would be about a quarter of a BILLION all up! Unique? rare? Hardly!

Bill, I wrote that book I gave you in three months, all three hundred plus pages and did it really for my kids and grandkids. Tell them, and us, about growing up. Lots of people have said how much the liked my book and related it to their own bringing up. I believe we would all benefit from your story if you made it available. You can publish it free on CreateSpace.com and get copies for the cost of printing or just do like I did and let amazon.com sell them for you. Get a grandkid to help set it up, my daughter got my story printed in a short day on the computer and now puts out a book a month or so, of her own. No cost to her. Check this site http://bit.ly/From the Shadows Come on folks, we'd love to hear your stories. Every time you're on fordbarn, when you are done type out a few pages, in no time you have the manuscript ready to submit to the printer. If I, a high school drop out can do it, anyone can.

Chief & Elbert wuz drivin' a dirt road in a "T" with NO lights, on their way home from a DRUNKEN Shindig @ Pritchetts' STORE/BARN.---"IF that Old Mans' MULE is sleeping in the road, AGAIN, I'm gonna' RUN over him"!!---They did & KILLED the motor. While cranking it, the Farmer came out with a SHOTGUN, fortunately, he wuz a BAD SHOT!---Later, they found out he only used Rock Salt. One Farmer used Rock Salt to keep THIEVES out of his Watermelon Patch, all he did was DESTROY 9 Watermelons! There, Watermelon is considered a DELICACY & thieves go to extremes, tryin' to STEAL them----

CRUDE COMPLEXITY
I will have to remember that one. I tell people that the Model T is more complex then a Model A, less parts but more complex.

After 90+ years many have to recharge the magnets in Model T's as they get weak. I think even the early cars had a battery but it was a dry cell and only used when cranking as the mag has to be spinning pretty good to hand crank a cold engine. The dry cell got replaced after a few months as there was no way to charge it on the car.
