Mystery Carburetor

I found this carburetor, I don't know what it is. It looks very much like a Tillotson, but it isn't split horizontally and screwed together, like every picture I can find. The body is a single casting with no removable bowl or anything. it is stamped "H-I-F MADE IN USA" Does anyone know what this is, and is it worth rebuilding/ are parts available?

It would be helpful to list your location, as there are listings for HIF carbs found in Europe as well... hey ya never know.

Cool. Yeah that doesnt fit the link, then. FWIW I would just consider a Tilly or Zenith from the cost vs. availability of parts and info aspect. It seems there were several lesser knowns, by todays standards, that were replacements available years ago in the aftermarket.

Thanks! That looks to be correct. Upon closer inspection, the letters are RIF. Since I can hardly find anything about it online, I assume it is not worth trying to rebuild and use, and I should just get a Tillotson or Zenith?

Soak it, take it apart and see if there are "common" parts. It would be a conversation piece if you were to get it to work.

What is the best penetrating liquid to soak a whole carburetor in? Also, does anybody have any information on this Rayfield? I can only find a few mentions of it here and there. Is it a rare piece?

The new carb cleaners aren't worth much compared to what I used to use in the 60's and 70's.
I'd try Evoporust, since Vince and several others have reported good results with it.

Does anybody by chance have that issue of Restorer, and could and post a picture of the Rayfield article? That would be awesome. I have a few issues, but not that one.

Model A Sam I have and using the RIP carb Made in USA on the side I have used it for 20 some years and never has given a problem, It has a small pump on the side right in the casting and pump the carb twice and it never fails to start. I like the three screw lid you can undo the top to see inside the carb with out taking it off the manifold. It also gives great mileage I have checked it on highway driving 24 mpg. Now that I have gave you the specs on operation would you sell it to me???

Go to www.kanolabs.com. Buy a gallon of their KROIL. Pour it into a plastic container that has a lid to stop evaporation. Use it to soak any part that needs to be freed up.
Their AeroKroil is also a great spray-on penetrant.
