I just lived that experience with my 56 t-bird. They honored the warranty but had a hard time finding the right mufflers.

There was a thread on the H.A.M.B. a few years ago about a guy who bought a "Lifetime Guaranteed" battery from J.C. Penney in about 1956. IIRC they did him proud for a long time.

Tubman, I still have a JC penney battery bought in 1976 on the same 56 T-bird mentioned above. They still honor the guarantee, although there is a tapdance you have to go through each time they replace it. The people now working at Penneys know nothing about the battery and have to "check with management." Eventually, they tell you what you have to do and try to buy back the guarantee.
So far, they have replaced 5 batteries. Turned out to be a good deal.

I had a friend who bought mufflers from Sears on a lifetime warranty for a '58 Lincoln with dual exhaust and since his wife drove it less than a mile to work, they went bad about once a year. After a few years, they told him they didn't do that anymore.

My cousin who lived in Pennsylvania told me that someone that he worked with had a car that needed mufflers every time that it went through state inspection. It seems that the mechanics that looked over the car would hang on the exhaust system and twist it until something broke. He got smart and bought Midas mufflers and has passed state inspection ever since.
