Default Gas cap question

I have a gas cap that I purchased from Bert's that has the 2 rivets to ensure that the flang does not spin/separate (A-9030-B 30-31 Stainless Gas Cap). It is on my 31 S/W model A. I purchased it from Bert's after reading information that they had the best designed one that matched the original and had the 2 rivets. It also has the leather gasket.

The paint is really starting to peel around the tank opening. It appears that the gas is soaking the leather gasket and getting up/over the gasket. I am mainly seeing it in front of the cap near the hood due to the slope of the car. I have tried tightening the cap all the way down or almost all the way down (which appears to put more tension on the flanges to make a better seal).

Questions - How do others prevent this from occuring? Are others using some other type of gasket, if so, where can I purchase one? This is occuring whether I am using EtOH free or regular gas.

Thanks

Can't help you, but I very seldom have more than about half a tank of gas. Has your tank been taken apart to remove rust and the baffles not re-installed??

Hello Paul,

The tank is clean and still has the baffles.

Try a different cap. I could see where the new cap does not tighten down enough due to the neck of the tank being worn, or damaged.
Try an old cap with a new gasket.

Do you have the original flame arrestor perforated tube in place? Is the bottom of that tube intact, or has it been knocked out? Without that tube fuel will constantly slop against the underside of the cap.

I have the other type of repro cap with the one rivet. I had to drill and tap it for a screw to hold it in place, as it spun and the vent got blocked. Anyway, it has some kind of rubber gasket. I don't have a problem with leakage or seepage. I took the flame arrestor out, as it's next to impossible to gas up with those suckers installed.

The filler neck shouldn't be painted all the way to the top. It should have been masked off halfway up.

What is the condition of the top of the filler neck, does the surface the leather gasket contact have rust pitting or dents

Kirk - there is no rust on the top of the filler neck. It is clean and no pitting.

Chris - The filler neck was only painted about 1/2 way up. Just the gas is getting under that paint and spreading to the top of the tank slowly.

MikeK - I do not have the flame arrestor in the tank. I've always had problems with more splashing of fuel out of the tank when filling it up. Wonder what percentage of people use that device?

I received a PM about either doubling the gasket or finding a thicker one. I took the leather gasket out of the other fuel cap on my other car (which is having the same problem) and doubled them up on the S/W. I am taking part in a tour this Saturday so I'll see how that goes. The seal is much tighter but I wonder why leather instead of some sort of neoprene gasket?

Thanks
Brian

are you sure its raw gas sloshing out or is it fuel vapors seeping out and eating into your paint?

You can put what ever type gasket in there you want that works. The gas tank gasket police have retired and are not being replaced.........................
