Default cutout check?

I bit the bullet and ordered a new generator, old one shot. any whey I have two cutouts one an original 1930 and one of the fun project evr type
I do not know if either one is any good they both spent time on the burnt out generator. my question is their any way to test a cutout before I put it on the new gen. and if there is not will a bad cutout screw up the new generator ?

Thanks I love this site

Lane,

You have two different devices. One is a cutout (original 1930). The other from fun projects is a combination cutout and voltage regulator.

yes thanks, you are correct.
what I would like to know is if there is a way to bench test the cutouts before I put either one on the new generator?
as I don't know is if the old generator did any damage to the cutouts since they were both on the old gen for a while.
the next question is if I cannot bench test them will I do any harm to the new gen. if I hook them up to see if either one is working?

The original cut is a switch that closes when a preset volage runs thru it's coil wire if it doesn't work, it won't hurt the generator. It should start charging around a fast idle, or 7 mph. And then not charge below.you can jumper it to see if the generator puts out. If the points are stuck, then it will need to be repaired or replaced. But short term no damage to generator. Fun projects. I don't know. Call them.

Do not flash the Fun Projects regulator ... it will be destroyed.

Do not jumper across terminals on Fun Projects to test generator

If in doubt go to funprojects.com and download install instructions.

Says among other things to remove regulator from generator before ANY testing is done.

Or call John Regan.

installation here if 6 volt pos ground model
http://funprojects.com/pdf/10505R6.PDF

Model T models are NEG ground and will be damaged if used on Model A.

If your car has neg ground battery regulator will be damaged ...

third brush MUST be correctly adjusted or damage will occur.

Using on Powerhouse generator will damage regulator.

ETC ETC ETC.....

You can test the cutout by applying battery voltage to the case and terminal that connects to the generator. As soon as the 6-volt battery is connected, you should feel a click as the contacts close. If you have a meter you should also be able to read battery voltage between the cutout output and the case.
