35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
I have been trying to get as much info as I can regarding my 35 pickup. I have all the available paint colors but my info says fenders were body color. Why then does almost every pickup I see have black fenders? I have seen some Dearborn winners that have Dearborn blue or vineyard green but with black fenders. How can it win a Dearborn award if the paint is not correct? Am I wrong in my info that I have sourced?

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
I think they could be ordered either way. I believe the reason for
black fenders was truck fenders got dented often from city traffic and was easier matched and repainted than colors. I had a body shop in the late 40's, early 50's and did the repairs for Bell Telephone Company in suburban Philadelphia. Most work was fender dents and their trucks all had black fenders and work was done on weekends so the trucks were not out of service. G.M.

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
I prefer the look of body color fenders. My truck, my choice.
But I think you are right, factory fenders seem to be body color as well. I will have black running boards, body and fenders are a Ford color from 1960's 'Wimbledon White' |

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
I always thought black fenders were standard and body color was extra cost. With '35-'37 still being Depression times I wonder if frugality entered into it and most opted not to spend the extra $$.

If black fenders on a Dearborn winner were the only wrong item, the point deduction would not be enough to prevent the award. Don Rogers |

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
To me putting black fenders on a 35-41 pickup is just wrong. (unless it is a black truck). The absolute worst is painting a V8 truck bright red with black fenders, topped off with wide whitewalls. Yuck. Looks like an old man imagined turning a nice old truck into something flashy. It does not work!

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
Little off topic, but while on the subject, pickups had black fenders only regardless of body color up through 33, and in 34 body colored fenders were an option.
If I am wrong on this please correct me, but I am pretty sure this is correct

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
I was told by some one with a Senior truck, that the black fenders were a selling point. It would be cheaper to have black fenders If you smashed up a fender, you could buy a fender new from your local Ford dealer already painted black and ready to mount. Thus you saved the aggravation of matching the body color to the fender and saved the cost of the paint. Most people were do it your selfers then.

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
Are there any factory photos around? I have only been able to find one and it was a dark color so you couldn't tell. Makes me wonder how many trucks left the dealer with color coded fenders. Really makes it hard for me to duplicate what would have been on my truck originally. One front fender is black, the other green. My rears were media blasted, then let to sit so there is surface rust all over them.

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
After I posted what I thought was correct I remembered I had Lorin Sorensen's "Commercial Fords" that has this chart in the back-

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
Does anybody know of an original unrestored 35-36 that has body colored fenders? Or are those trucks long gone. I have not seen one yet, I have seen a dozen or so 29-31 A pickups that were originals but have yet to come across any 35-6 trucks. Seems like they were used pretty hard.

Re: 35-37 pickups. Why so many black fenders?
If you own the book the Classy V-8 by Lorin Sorenson, look on page 67.. It shows a Ford delivery yard with all 1936's in it. EVERY Big truck and half ton in the photo has body color fenders, with the exception of a panel delivery and a Big truck in the far background that has black grille and fenders. These two were likely fleet orders.

I'm surprised that so many colours where available . I have no idea if mine is the original paint, I thought it may have been red? Someone recognise the colour of mine?
