Default Flashing a Generator

When flashing a gen. ..should it motor in the direction the engine rotates or the opposite ditection

Yes the generator should motor-rotate in the same direction that the engine turns when it is running. If the generator motors counter clockwise, the ground is reversed on the field coils and the generator won't charge. I've stated this fact many times before. Don't expect the generator to motor in any direction unless the fan belt is removed from the generator pulley. A good generator will motor but very weakly, it isn't made to have power like the starter. One of the wires from the field coils attaches under the screw on the adjustable 3rd brush. The other field coil wire grounds to the housing.
