Chevron Oil For Older Engines
Fordy's
found Chevron Delo 100 and 400 brand oil that is recommended for 'older engines'. it just rubs me the wrong way to have to go get separate oil for the Y Block. i'll add what chevron says on their website later. Have A Nice Day!

Re: Chevron Oil For Older Engines
LOL thats no different than choosing single grade oil or multi grade, or choosing detergent or non detergent, just do it and get on with it, lifes to short to sweat the little things, if it gets to be to much of a hassle sell the car and go buy a new one and be done with it LOL

thank you for your input. here's what Chevron says about Delo 100 oil. 'Delo 100 Motor Oil High-performance crankcase oils recommended for use in farm machinery, construction equipment, marine, older two- and four-stroke diesel engines, and other off-highway applications where the SAE 30 or 40 grades are specified by the OEM' Have A Nice Day!

Its not that you have to get oil specifically for the "Y" Block engine, its just that the quanity of an ingreedient called ZDDP has been reduced in the newer oils availiable today. All of the older engines require a higher ZDDP content than todays oils offer. These older engines would include the "Y" Blocks, scrub engines, hemis, etc, all the oldies. For some information about ZDDP content and recommended oils, take a look see at the following link. http://www.ctci.org/gilsgarage/EngineOil.php Hope this helps,Oldmics Last edited by Oldmics; 04-03-2012 at 10:45 AM. |

Re: Chevron Oil For Older Engines
Suppose you also had a late model car that calls for 5W-20 motor oil. You would still need to buy two different types of oil, one for the newer car and another type for the old car, right?
I for one am just thankful to have this website to go to where people are good enough to share information and ideas with their fellow enthusiasts. I did try to research amounts of zinc in common motor oils years ago on my own, but these folks here gave me more information in one-fail-swoop than I got thru many hours of my own research. |

Fordy's
here's the info from Chevron on Delo 400. 'Delo 400 SAE 10W, 20, 30, 40, 50Delo 400 heavy-duty motor oils are mixed fleet engine oils recommended for older four-stroke diesel and gasoline engines. Formulated with advanced additive technology, they provide excellent control of deposits and sludge, minimizing oil consumption and optimizing engine overhaul intervals.' i'll do some more looking on Chevron website and see if they say anything about Zinc stuff. Have A Nice Day!

Fordy's
here's the zinc info from Chevron 'ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate or zinc diaryl dithiophosphate) widely used as an antiwear agent in motor oils to protect heavily loaded parts, particularly the valve train mechanisms (such as the camshaft and cam followers) from excessive wear. It is also used as an antiwear agent in hydraulic fluids and certain other products.' couldn't find where it said how much of it was in Delo 100 and 400. Have A Nice Day!

Re: Chevron Oil For Older Engines
The Delo 400 oil is a multi-viscosity oil.Being a multi-viscosity oil rates it differently than the straight 30 or 40 weight Delo 100 oil.
The Delo 400 would be OK for our favorite Y Block engine. I would not use the Delo 100 in our "Y"s since it is rated differently unless some additives were included. Just buy the correct oil the first time and be done with it. Oldmics |

Re: Chevron Oil For Older Engines
You may want to read the link I posted here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=685360 the link is a fair amount of reading but important points are brought up,you do want to run a diesel oil that is too high in detergents in a gas motor because even though the ZDDP level is high the detergents can cause cam and lifter failure. The Delo 400 is a good choice becuse it has good ZDDP but a low TBN and calcium which are the detergents, the old favorite Rotella is on the TBN high side.

Re: Chevron Oil For Older Engines
I have been using Delo 400 for years without any problems. I started using Chevron products ~32 years ago when I became an employee. I will admit since the "ZDDP scare" I have added 4 oz. ZDDP with every other oil change.

Re: Chevron Oil For Older Engines
A few years ago, there was an article in Old Cars Weekly that dealt with the subject of zinc in old engine oil. Written by a respected engineer, it said we want a minimum of 1000 PPM zinc. Many oils have 1000, to 1300 PPM zinc, and are very good oils. If you travel the country, look to see where you can find the oil of your choice just in case you need to buy some. When I start a trip, I take a gallon with me, but that is still no garantee I wont have a leak and need more. If you have an older engine, with stock valve springs, dont worry about it.
