Default 1932 B2Carburetor on Model A Ford

What is the purpose of the small spring on the float of the 1932 B2 Carburetor? Is there any problems with leaving it off when put on the 1930 Model A Ford engine? Thanks for any info and advice.

I believe it was put there to help resist fuel pressure because the Model B has a fuel pump. No problems with leaving it off with the stock A engine.

The spring was used on the 2nd generation carburetor Model B engines (which had a fuel pump on the engine.) A problem was observed and the purpose of the spring was to somewhat "counteract" the fuel pump pressure tending to keep the float "down" and gasoline flowing.

The spring counteracts the pressure in the gas line.

There may also be a baffle which prevents somewhat sloshing of the gasoline in the carburetor bowl.

The spring can be left out for gravity gasoline systems. The baffle if present may be better left.

After struggling with my Mod.B carb's idiosyncrasies, I was advised to take the spring out. That did not solve every problem, but it made things better. Gravity feed does not require a spring. Also, I'm learning that the jets must be clean and not burred. And the float settings are critical. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work properly the first time (it may) and allow your engine to warm up. Good Luck!

I'm running two B2 carbs on my roadster and I have never used float springs with mine. As others have said they were only needed to calm the flow from the B fuel pump
