Default Leak at top of oil filter

Please forgive me if I missed this in the search. I changed my oil filter for the first time, (this is my first flathead), and although I'm glad she runs after replacing a cracked head, oil is gushing out of the top of the filter canister. I've tightened and reset the rubber seal on there three times, and it still pours out oil after a few seconds of idling.

Am I missing something?

There are two possible places for it leak.
The seal between the cover and the main body and the seal under the head of the attaching bolt, which is it?

Fritz.......I just had the same problem with a leak, but I got another canister. Oil came out of the top just like that. You have a rubber washer as you noted. Take that off and get yourself a copper washer and use it. Make sure you have a good seal inside the lid and screw the hold down bolt tight with copper washer. I bet you solve your problem.

Let me know.

I've used the rubber washers on all our Flatheads for years. A trick I learned a long time ago, was to tighten the lid so it could be turned, give it a quarter turn and snug the bolt a bit more, one more quarter turn and tighten the bolt. You should have no leaks after that. It has always worked for me.

Did you dig out the old seal from within the groove before attempting to fit the new seal?

It is leaking from under the cover. The rubber seal is only about a year old, and I did reset it into the cover before reinstalling it.

You said that you put in a new filter. Every filter that I have replaced came with a new gasket so why would you use the old one?

If you used the old gasket it's probably not sealing. Try a new one.

if you don't have a new seal and cannot get one--as a quick fix--turn the seal over before you re-use it

Also...be sure that the brass fitting in the supply side plumbing is restricted, with one of its holes necked down to about .060.
That piece insures that exit flow exceeds inlet, and without it the bypass filter (which functions essentially as a leak in the pressure system) will fill up and attain full system pressure...which the gasket cannot handle even if all is right about it.

Frtiz....I've been using the NAPA Filter # 1006. It's also made for WIX. Each filter has 2 new cap seals inside each box. Just take a look at the copper washer too.

The NAPA filters come with two rubber gaskets, Use the wider one under the cap. Be sure that the rubber ring is completely in the groove before installing. I use a Teflon washer under the head of the cap bolt. It can be reused over and over.

Well, another part from Macs was deficient. There was no replacement gasket in the new filter box. And it's definitely from the gasket not seating right (being bent up a bit).

They did give me free shipping and 10% off a new order of filters, however. Thanks for the help.

I've got a canister with a very tight fitting lid. It looks like it's down, but it always needs another bang on the edge to fit down all the way.

I always get a nice fresh Wix filter from my local parts store. No use ordering from a specialty house and paying shipping for it.

NAPA # 1006 is what I have been using and there are two gaskets in the box.

Works great.

Glad to see that you found the problem!
