Default Do these 1940 shocks mount like this or...

I'm putting a pair of '40 shocks on different car, but I didn't pull them. So I'm not sure how they mount. Is it like the first pic, bolts at a 45º or 60º? Or are they horizontal. 1939/40 owners please chime in.

Secondly, what kind of fluid can I top them off with that isn't too hard to find?

Many Thanks 'barners

I mounted mine on my model A frame kind of like in the first picture. I moved the shock arm through the range of operation, with the linkage in there, and mounted it centered. As long as there no chance of bottoming out either way.You can get hydraulic jack oil, I only had tractor hydraulic on hand, it has worked for years. I dumped the old crud out.

40 shocks mount horizontal like picture #2. Use hydraulic jack oil.
