Default Crank Pulley Keyway Damage

I am gradually re-assembling an 8BA . I have installed the crank and now looking at the other items to add to the engine.

I have picked up the front pulley and cleaned it up to prepare for some paint and to install.

After a trial fit I discover the pulley is not a snug fit on the keyway. It rotates considerably. On closer examination I discovered that the keyway in the pulley is worn considerably.

Having two other 8BAs in the workshop I retrieved the pulley from one of those engines. That was even worse .

Have a look at the pictures attached.

Is there a repair that can be performed on this worn keyway?
I don't think loading it up with loctite is the answer.

I would replace rather than repair. There should be plenty of those around from cracked engines that have been stripped. Those must have been run loose or hit in some way....Mark

I think I am seeing the cast iron pulley in your pictures. If so, those tend to have cracks running through the bore. I stopped trying to find good used ones because after we had them cleaned thoroughly, we’d see the fine line cracks and have to toss them out. The cast iron narrow belt pulleys are now available new, so don’t worry if you can’t seem to find a good used one. The wide belt pulleys have a machined steel hub and are much less prone to cracking than the cast iron types. We have both wide and narrow belt pulleys in stock and I’m sure they are available from other vendors as well.

Agree. Not worth the effort to fix. Last thing you want is a pulley failure and that thing comes apart.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I looks like a new pulley is the solution.

You can have a new keyway broached at a machine shop.
