Well now, and I thought I was the only odd ball that used stock Ford air cleaners on my Offy Super manifold. Years ago, like fifty plus, I got tired of the sucking air noise that most bonnet type air cleaners made. I was also concerned about the trash that could get into the engine from driving the car to work on a daily basis, so I switched to stock Ford oil bath air cleaners that I modified to hold modern paper filters. One of these days I'll find a smaller air cleaner that will match the one on the rear carb. My golden rule is to not fix it, "if it ain't broke"

Re: Air cleaners for duel carbs
I have been running the generic helmet type aftermarket air filters on two 97's on a warmed up '36LB. I made a top plate from a sheet of aluminum because I thought the space between the helmet and the filter was very limited and left the helmet itself off. I've read where those generic paper filters in some cases aren't made for automotive applications and won't flow enough air. And I thought I should get better than about 16 mpg with a '36 5 window coupe. So, a couple weeks ago I bit the bullet and ordered the K&N elements. First run of about 120 miles of mostly highway miles I got just under 20 mpg. Granted that's only the first fill up, but I was careful to fill the tank the same each time. Will keep track over the span of more miles and varied driving and post an update when I have more reliable info. Rod

Re: Air cleaners for duel carbs
I'm running an Edelbrock super dual with a homemade air cleaner that uses a single paper element. The carbs are 1 1.32 Holley's. Now for street use with a mid range cam Like the L-100 I find low speed throttle response to be much better with 2" risers

Re: Air cleaners for duel carbs
I tried K&N on my trip 97 setup and they ran too rich. Now just running Frog Mouths with just carb screens.
