Spray paint crinkle
Hey Guys.....have you ever had this happen to you.....I sanded down the F100 doors panels and decided to spray one yesterday as it was warmer here. I used Rustoleum. The panel turned out great except for one area that all crinkled up ! Anyone ever had that happen ? I'm going to let it dry and re-sand, but I don't want to go through it again.
Thx....Mike |

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Usually spraypaint wrinkles from oil grease on the surface or incompatible paints and body fillers.
if its one spot I would guess oil or grease got on it...

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Hmmmmm.....okay thx. Maybe it was the lower layers of paint that were incompatible. I sort of remember some light blue showing through before I sprayed.
Thx....Mike |

Re: Spray paint crinkle
I've had Rustoleum do that when I applied it too thick or "crowded" the coats by applying second or third coats too soon after the first.

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Sand it smooth, then wipe it down with paper towels dampened, not wet, with lacquer thinner or acetone. Wipe it again with a dry cloth. If its really clean, apply primer in very thin coats. If the rattle can has been in a cool garage, sit in inside the night before, or sit it on top of the water heater while you prepare the panel. Shake for a long time to mix.

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Ole3 Don touch upon something that I will add to. Temperature differential can make a big difference in the finish. If you have a metal panel that is sitting out in the sun on sawhorses and you paint it with a cold can of rust-o-leum paint, it can crinkle the finish. Ole Dons suggestion to set the can on top of the stove where the pilot lights are is a great suggestion because it helps to "equalize" the temperature of the paint and the surface you are painting if the sun has been beating down on the panel. (caution, don't let the can get too hot and don't set the can on the concrete with the sun hitting it too long as it may cause the temperature of the contents to get too high and force the can to burst. Just keep an eye on it.
Also, forced drying by means of a hair dryer that blows heated air on a freshly painted panel can cause problems too with some paints especially if the metal panel is cold (and it will be because the fresh paint cools the panel quickly). You can get away with quick drying like this with good results as long as you don't overdo it with the hot air. |

Re: Spray paint crinkle
I'm just going to wait now until the weather gets warmer. I didn't have that problem on any other surface so far.
Thx all....Mike |

I applied the paint and let them sit in the garage for a few hours then brought them into the spare bathroom overnight with the door closed & exhaust fan on. So far so good! |

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Hmmmmm.......it pisses me off because I had the panel sanded down so nice and then this happens. I maybe should have primed the area first ?

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Adhesion is another factor. I would apply a good adhesion promoter first then apply primer/paint.

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Read the directions on the back of spray can. The temperature listed
is critical to the dry time. AND the RE-COAT time listed is the MOST critical of all, to prevent crinkling when using spray can paint. Do exactly as the re-coat time says in the directions, Not as people tell you, as most every manufacture has different re-coat times. . .

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Just went through that problem on the 406 I'm rebuilding. My problem showed up after I applied clear over the Rustoleum. The block and heads were fine, but the flywheel cover, fan pulley and expansion tank all exploded on me. Sanded them all back down and repainted them. Skipped the clear this time. Looks good again.

Re: Spray paint crinkle
It always good to use the same brand of paint and primer to be sure of compatibility.
As was suggested, you can put the can on a water heater to warm up, but please, not a on stove where a burner can accidentally be turned on and the house goes down in the fire.

Re: Spray paint crinkle
Well crap......sanded the panel down nice and smooth.....heated up the area so it was not cold to spray on.....cleaned with a thiner and let it dry over night. I put two very light coats on and that same spot crinkled again ! Damn.....back to the drawing board !!
