Doodlebug transmission linkage
Hi,
Wondering what people have done in the past for linking 2 transmissions together. I will be putting an A trans behind a AA trans. I know the input shaft has an 1 3/8 10 spline, and the output of the AA trans has that gear on 6 splines. Fairly new to Model A's and just looking for thoughts. I have no problems fabricating, have lathe, welders, etc. Thanks! Paul |

Paul, sounds like a great project.
Back in the old days, I had a Model T that I put a Model A transmission and rear end behind the Model T transmission. Doing this gives you all kinds of gear ratios. With the T you only had a high and low so I did not get as many ratios as you will get. But when having both trannys in reverse, it would crawl. Good luck. It is a fun thing to do.

For strength you'd be better off to put the A tranny in front of the AA tranny. When not in high gear, the tranny multiplies torque, so since the AA tranny is so much heavier, it would be better behind the multiplied torque of the A tranny. Most doodlebugs were made from AA rear ends, and this would also work better with the AA tranny coupled to the rear end.
My neighbor had a small tree farm that he worked with a small tractor, which I always thought was homemade, but am not sure of that. It has an antique large Briggs & Stratton overhead valve engine with exposed rockers. This went to two Model A trannys coupled together. His son has it in Florida now, so I can't check it out any more. |

Tom, it does have an AA rear in it. What does this rear have coming off the pinion? Internal or external spline? u joint? I'll see what i can do about switching the 4 and 3 speed, but space is very limited in the rear. Thanks again! |

I had one that had a 4 speed, then a dual high, and the AA rear. It was geared just right. The dual high had a model A gearshift lever welded to the pedal assembly, which was easier to operate than the foot pedals. I used this machine for 30 years, then sold it to a museum.

Not trying to hijack your post, but there seems to be some knowledgeable Doodlebug guys replying. Are most Doodlebug rear ends mounted solid to the frame or do they retain the springs? If mounted solid, doesn't that flex the frame quite a bit when going over uneven terrain? Did they lock the rearends?

The ones I've seen have also been solid to the frame. Just pivot or spring the front axle.
I would never lock the rear axle. They don't turn well when you have a locked axle. |

All the ones I have had the rear axel was solid to the frame with U bolts. My brother Darrell in Vermont has on with the axel solid, and my other brother Darrell in Vermont has 4 of them, all with solid mount axels. Never lock the rear end.

The dual high is a good idea! I'll keep my eyes out for one. I have another partial doodlebug on its way, so if I don't use it for this one, I'll use it on the next.
Axle is welded to the frame on this one. Looks like what I'll need is a 6 spline to 10 spline u joint/adapter. If such a thing doesn't exist, I figure I can make one from the gear that bolts to the back of the 4 speed and chop up a clutch disk for the other side. Anybody got a junk clutch disk?
