Valve hard seats
I would like to perform my own valve seat repair on my engine, is their any specific tools I can purchase or must I have this done at a machine shop?

Re: Valve hard seats
What's wrong with your valve seats?
You need seat installation tools, which is expensive, if you need to install a seat. Whether or not the seat is replaced you will need a valve grinder and seat grinder to do your own valves. These are also expensive tools. BTW, you don't need to install seats unless the original seat is recessed too much, or the block is cracked at the seat. |

Re: Valve hard seats
I agree with Tom. Replacing valve seats is a last resort to save the block that has a crack at the seat or seats that are recessed.

Re: Valve hard seats
You have to start some where. But putting valve seats in right takes skill and practice, plus the right equipment. You really need some one to guide you through it. The last thing you want is the valve seat to come out.

If you are grinding the seats and you are able to do so there's plenty of hand tools available on ebay to do the job. The overall cost of getting set up to do only one engine wouldn't make sense. If you are contemplating replacing valve seats that's a whole other ball game for someone to do without experience. Again it would be more practical to have the machine shop do the work. |
