What t5's will work behind a 50 flathead
Had a t5 with mechanical speedo behind my 50 f1 and the syncros went bad after it was rebuilt twice. Because the parts are obsolete, what other t5's will work and where is the best place to buy them. I wanted to run my stock speedometer but now I don't care if I run an electronic one, as long as I get a good tranny. Thanks

Re: What t5's will work behind a 50 flathead
Who told you the non-world class or world class t5's are obsolete? There are too many out there for that. I got my parts at thegearbox.org. $156 for the complete kit. Worked great. Mine is 1982 Chevy S10. T5's are getting hard to find for a reasonable price. Something must be causing the synchros to fail. Mine is still going strong after 8 years of constant use.

Re: What t5's will work behind a 50 flathead
I just had a NWC T5 built with Teflon (WC) synchros. You just have to swap from gear oil to ATF.
Since you're in Mountaintop, Pa., I'm going to recommend my guy in Effort, Pa. who as far as I'm concerned is a T5 expert. PM me if you're interested. By the way, the wrong gear oil can disintegrate brass synchros. Last edited by Mike51Merc; 09-06-2014 at 08:16 AM. |

Mike, do you have a name and email or # on the guy in Effort? I'm in the Poconos as well and could always use a good honest mechanic. Does he work on the Oldies as well?

Sent you a PM. He is a specialist rebuilder of manual transmissions of all kinds going back to the 1930s.

The gears are hard to come by, you can still buy all other parts. Some of the gears in the one I have are worn .

Id look for other opinions on rebuilding the one you have…its all set up and fitting
Id guess you’re previous rebuilds were done with import parts … try to find a old timey builder that will have quality parts or know where to get them |

Is your tranny a NWC? What oil are you using in it? Something is effecting your synchros and it could be the wrong oil.

Re: What t5's will work behind a 50 flathead
Try Ed Hartnett 4 speeds - just bought a NWC T5 from him for $1K - he asked what gears and tire size I was running, put in a .86 5th gear at my request, and installed a mechanical tailshaft so I can run my stock speedo. He is in Lansdown, PA outside of Philly. He always has a booth setup at Fall Carlisle. [email protected], 610-623-9381.
