Same thing happened to me in 1981 driving up to my aunts to give her a ride in the 29 spec. coupe. Took out 2 teeth in the ring gear and 1 in the pinion. What a bang! Sure knocked the dust off the floor. Had another rear end for parts so we had her back on the road the next day. Your experience reminded me, never want a repeat.

so i got back to work on it. Parts ordered from synders should be here thursday. Rearend is shot. Missing teeth on a spider and locked the pinion up. That in turn broke the u joint, transmission case, sliding gear, and the clutch is shot too. Whoo!

Be curious to know how many parts are "original" and how many are modern market.

As I do up my NEXT rear end, I might choose to do a lot more "new" if there seems to be advantage to do so.

This is a good time to go with the 3.27 or 3.54 ratio ring and pinion.

Dynaflash 8, I'm in Auburn also. If you wish, I would like to see what happened and offer my help with the project.

Hey rock, pm sent.

Tom, im gonna need alot stouter engine before i go thinking like that :P

Joe, as far as i can tell, most parts are original, but it appears someone has had it apart before ie: mismatched bolts. all of the rivets sheared off the u joint. I picked up a rebuilt transmission complete from hogs head to clamshell, and have a good rearend. Im gonna take this oppurtunity of having the engine out to drop the pan, address some leaks, and adjust the rod caps. Also ordered a new manifold to try and get rid of that pesky exhaust leak.

Assuming you have the earlier and original "ring" style UJ. Cross style has spring clips.

The original or first design had a circular ring with four "trunnions" formed into the ring. The input and output splines each engaged two opposite of the trunnions with two "ears." There are like 8 rivets that hold the two halves of the ring together and encircle the ears.

The later design (it started even before Model B I believe) was essentially a modern U joint with a "cross" and input and output yokes. Each yoke engaged the cross at two opposing points.
