Default Engine Shipping Cost ???

Curious to know what the cost is to ship an engine or transmission coast to coast. What carriers are used for this?

I shipped a comlpete 59AB with truck 4 speed from here to Ca. for abit over $200. That was about 3 years ago. Expect it would be closer to $275 now with the way shipping prices have gone up. Rod

I bought a very nice, complete, running, rebuilt flathead engine from Walt DuPont in Maine and had it shipped to California for $395.00 this year. Walt made a very nice wooden container for it and it arrived in perfect condition. I went through a man by the name on Mark at enginesdirect.net. They are in Arizona. I would use them again if I needed an engine shipped. - Dennis

You can also check any of the freight companies. Fedex, UPS freight, Yellow Roadway,Conway ect. Call and compare as they all differ in price depending on how much room they have on certain routes.

Although not as heavy as an engine I shipped a pickup cowl FL to CA for less than $200 via GREYHOUND. Check with them. Also note that you have to drop it off at their station and the other end has to pick it up their. Not delivered door to door.

Try to find a freight company that go's direct and not passing off to another company. If you have a friend that ships products every day they get much better rates even on picked up incomming shipments. G.M.

My experience has been abit different. Getting a quote from a regional carrier that passes it off to a big carrier seems to be abit cheaper. Big carrier quote to ship a Model A cowl was nearly $200, shipped through regional carrier that passed it off to a larger carrier quote was $105. Rod

Bought two flatheads from a guy in Atlanta. I had them shipped through the company I work for. Cost me $266. They were 1100# together. Bruce

If you can get the engine strapped to a pallet and also have it picked up from a business with a loading dock and shipped to a business with a loading dock you can save $$.

If you check the differant companies on Transport Review, you will find them with a star rating of one to five stars. Some freight shipping outfits have terrible reviews. You can read the reviews as well as the rating. The site is; www.transportreviews.com

I've had good luck with an outfit called Estes. Very reasonable prices and even when they tell me that the load cannot be off loaded by their drivers and I must provide the forklift, the driver always quietly offloads it for me since they have a hydraulic tailgate lift outfit on the back of their trucks. Never with a actual extra cost other than maybe slipping a $10 or $20 to him for the favor.

Are you the Seller or the Buyer ?

If the Seller is not listing the engine for " local pickup only "
they should be prepared to assist in the crating and loading
of the engine at the pickup point.

Building a substantial container that will withstand freight transfer
is the key to having the engine arrive in the condition it left in.

If the Seller is not used to shipping an engine or does not already
have a custom container built, that can be a big obstacle.

Where the engine is picked up at and where it is dropped off
at can also be a potential problem.

I too have been treated fairly by Estes. I have found the classification of the engine parts can change the shipping cost. If I remeber correctly the least expensive was a rate for "salvage" or "scrap" engine parts. But in an enclosed wooden box or crate bolted or strapped to a pallet things will be perfectly safe.

I couldn't think of the name in my last post but I had 6 or so heavy shipments moved by Estes and they were half the price of others. Some of them realy get carried away in price on a one time user. G.M.

The freight classification makes a big difference in price but the only thing to watch out for is it also affects how much they will pay you if they damage it. I work for one of the freight companies and also make sure you protect it or it will get damaged. I always tell people if you put it in a crate don't make the top flat or it WILL get stacked on and possibly crushed.

Don't usually bring up an old thread but felt it was worth it and might help others.I recently shipped my crated flathead out of my coupe from Hilo,HI to Windsor,CA.ENGINE SHIPPERS out of Phoenix handled the whole 9 yards and tracked it from the day I dropped the crate off to delivery at UPS dock.Took less than a month and cost $450 w/insurance.It went ocean freight to CA then UPS from Compton.CA to Santa Rosa,CA.

PS, Dave @ ENGINE SHIPPERS is who I dealt with and always returned my emails & calls .
Excellent service
