Default What's the maintenance on rear axle bearings?

The roller bearings at the ends of the axles? I have the hubs off now, do I just slather the bearings up with grease before reinstalling. Was that like a routine maintenance thing on these cars?

That is what I do every time I have the hubs off. Put a little grease between the rollers. That is assuming they are clean and in good shape.

It would be best to clean all of the old grease off of the bearings and hubs and look them over for wear and damage. Pack them with new grease before re-assembly.
You will need to remove seals to get the bearings out. I would replace the seals with new.

There is a snap ring that holds the seal in which 1crosscut has mentioned changing. I also agree with him, if the hub is off in your hand go the effort and remove the bearing for inspection, not just greasing!

Just hand pack them once a year and don’t use that grease fitting on the back plate.

When I did this job I packed the bearing, but also pumped grease through the zerk feeding the area while it was out till I got fresh grease coming out. Now I just give the zerk a pump or two while greasing the chassis.

Speaking from experience, that will eventually contaminate your brake linings with unwanted grease, requiring the shoes to be re-lined. To avoid unnecessary expense, its best not to grease those zerk nipples at all, and just re-pack the bearings every 10,000 miles.

The rear hubs on my Phaeton have not been off in about 40,000 miles, most of which has been done towing a camper trailer. I give them a shot or three when I grease the car.
