Default Generator Wiring Question

I have a generator on my Model A Roadster and a very similar generator on my Model A chassis. These are the type of generator that has two wires that come out of the housing. One wire is grounded to the generator housing using the screws which attach the cutout to the housing. On one the other wire is attached to the "battery" terminal of the cutout, on the other the wire is attached to the "generator" terminal of the cutout, which is correct? See photos:

One ground, one output. The generator output wire goes to the input of the cutout and the car wiring goes to the output (batt) of the cutout.

The ground wire is for the field ground.
The other wire is from the armature output brush, and goes to the GEN terminal of the cutout.

The band with the notch is for a starter. Bratton's has new bands.

Ok thanks,

So it looks like the wiring for the generator in the top photo (with the black cutout) is incorrect and the "output" wire should go on the opposite side of the cutout, which is kind of what I thought.

Also I read somewhere that these "two wire" generators are not original Model A's and are from later model Fords.

Hooked up like the top picture should have fried the generator if
the battery is installed.

Well the good news is it wasn't run as shown in the photo. I just pulled this engine from the chassis where it had been run, but there were no other wires connected on the "battery" side of the cutout, as the chassis didn't have a wiring harness or amp meter. The ignition was hot wired from the battery. So hopefully it is okay. I'll find out soon enough.
