From early on they were popular with Hot Rodders and Custom car builders. A second body was/is often used for roof pieces when chopping. They were also popular in dirt track and drag racing. I prefer the looks of the 5w, but most prefer the 3w.

Production numbers I have seen:

1933 3w 23,619 vs 5w 44,184
1934 3w 28,457 vs 5w 76,528

So about twice the number of 5w in 1933 and almost three times as many in 1934.

Update: Well, that was stupid, I have 33/34s on the brain!!!

If you’re talking 1936 three window coupe
there were 21,446 deluxe (all were deluxe)models produced and the
1936 five window coupe there were 78,534 standard models and 29,938 deluxe models.

Now very similar is 35 three window coupe of which
31,513 deluxe models were produced, and the
1935 five window coupe 78,477 standard models were produced and 33,065 deluxe models produced.

So there were about five times as many five window coupe‘s as three window coupe‘s in 1936.

I know of two unbelievable old time body men who turn 5 windows into extended window 3 W. The results is what Henry should have produced. I'll try to post some picts.

The one is Cole Foster in CA (a car he did was featured in The Rodder's Journal) and the other is Barry W. from Milford, PA.

You've got to have stones to cut up a 5W like they do, but the results is a slinky and sexy lean 3W.

I’d like to see that!
My 35 three window is perfection in my opinion. Love to see the differences.

Here is a Ford promotional photo(on actual photo paper) of a French 35 3W.Spider is the French term for rumble seat. Its pronounced "speeder".Found a few in a folder at a swap meet here today. Also in the stash are individual pics of a few other 35 body styles and dashboard. There is a'34 display cutaway engine and trans in the chassis in the group of pic I found.I'll post those also.

Ralph, I'll try to find the Rodder's Journal issue that has Cole Foster's version in bare metal.

It's funny, I prefer the '35 over the '36, but to each his own I guess. I'd love to see some picts. of your car.

Tim,

Not to be argumentative, but I have always found that the flat "stand-up" grille on the '35 cars to clash with the "Art-Deco" overall styling of the '35-'36 cars. Just my opinion.

Sure, I totally understand. It's the grille of the '35 that I love the most.

I guess just another example of beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Haha.

Still in the bare metal stages, and I’m replacing the white fives with wires.

I like the flowing lines of the 35/36 three window much more than the five window. Why would production of the three window be so much lower? Bill

Yes, one of the mods, back in the day. They also put hydraulic brakes( hence the wide fives),
A side shift column, and matching tranny. Filled the roof, and put a set of Mercury gauges in it.

3 Windows were all Deluxe models. This was during the depression and when somebody bought a new car they saved as much money as they could, so they opted for the cheaper car. I think in those years where there was a 5 window and a 3 window, the 5 window always out sold the 3 window.

I just stopped at a friends place over the weekend. He has a '36 5-window. I looked it over pretty closely, and it seems to have a lot more interior room than a '36 3-window I had about 20 years ago. The reason I sold that car was a lack of interior room. I believe I could live with a 5-window, but the 3-window was just too cramped. Of course, the matter of looks comes in as well.

The bottom line is probably that most folks didn't want to pay extra for a lesspractical car, albeit a better looking one.

both coupes have big package trays that can be removed or narrowed so the seat can be moved back.

rustythmb is correct. I relocated the the seats tracks back a couple of badly needed inches. Worked great for me.
