32 Hand Throttle Fix?
Gentlemen,
I have the hand throttle hooked up on my 32 Tudor with 59A and single carb. It goes to the bell crank and down to the foot throttle. What holds the dash knob and shaft to a selected position (fast idle)? The return spring on the firewall linkage pulls it shut. Thanks! Last edited by hotrodA; 01-08-2022 at 06:06 PM. |

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
I have the same problem on the 5W with a '33 engine. I don't know how it's supposed to work from the factory so I just use a clothes pin behind the knob.

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
They can be whittled or sanded down or shimmed out to achieve the desired idle speed and are made of soft wood so no scratchy the dash.

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
That's funny. My grandfather had one for his '34 truck. He even had one that he cut in half for a low "high idle".

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
On a real '32 the throttle rod connects to a bell crank .There is then a rod that the connects the bell crank to the pedal. No rubber grommet. The rod that goes thru the dash tunnel has a sleeve that is secured by a nut. You might try to create some friction or use the clothes pin suggestion.

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
I may use the cloths pin too. Mine creeps back in quickly instead of staying as set. I blamed it on me lubing the system too much??
Thanks! I use this same thing on my Ford tractor for the ckoke. Regards, Chris

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
As Sheldon indicates, there were no rubber grommets involved originally. The back of the bezel or escutcheon that the rod rod passes through on the instrument panel originally had a C-shaped sleeve covering a round pellet of steel that inserted into a hole in the bezel against the flat side of the rod. The pressure of the sleeve held the rod in the desired position fore and aft as well as keeping the rod in the correct position so that the "THROTTLE" lettering on the knob was kept in a horizontal position. (Some very early '32 choke and throttle rods lacked this feature.)

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
As David wrote- my throttle had a brass insert under the steel sleeve- I drove that brass insert tighter to the shaft and rotated the sleeve back over it. Seems to be a temporary fix. My throttle knob was brown? Newc

Re: 32 Hand Throttle Fix?
You're right, the insert is made of brass, not steel. All North American '32 instrument panel knobs were originally brown plastic with white lettering.
