Default Any reason to NOT use a rebuilt coil from Skip?

I like the way a stock-style coil looks and I appreciate the ease of mounting it with a stock bracket. I'm running 12V and I noticed Skip Haney can rebuild stock units to 12V. I know a lot of guys run the Bosch blue coil.

Any reason to not run a rebuilt stock-type of coil?

Thanks,

Tim

From my experience so far, if you want to keep that stock look, then no there is no reason you can't use a Skip rebuilt coil.

I guess what I'm asking is the practical reason to not use a rebuilt one from him. Does the Bosch Blue type give better performance or another reason why folks use these instead of rebuilt stock one?

Skip rebuilt coils are the best. I see no reason to go elsewhere. His rebuilt water pumps are the best also. ????????????

Which distributor are you planning to use?

If your not concerned with originality then go ahead and use the the Bosch coil if you like. I don't know that there is one better than the other, I've never used the Bosch coil. I assume they would both work the same. I've only used Skips rebuilt coil with the exception of running the tube type coil as a back up.

These original coils are all suspect now for likely shorted windings, especially under heated conditions. Therefore, personally, I would not leave my driveway without having an original type coil that's been rewound by Skip Haney.
Now if I'm running a crab style distributor, with coil mounted on top of engine, it wouldn't make that much difference to me if I had a more modern round/can style coil, or the original Ford type squarish looking coil used from 42 to 48. But.... if I did use the original Ford coil, I would have it rewound by Skip for the voltage I plan to use.
I am planning to run a Harmon Collins, dual point, dual coil on one of my 35's, and in that case I will be using two stock looking 42-48 coils, both rewound by Skip for 6 volts.

There is no reason not to use a 12V skip coil. The only thing I will mention is they are .8-.9 ohms. You will need to use a different resister under your dash. Preferably a 2.2-2.4 ohm resistor. Your original is a .8 ohm

No reason at all not to use one of Skips rebuilt coils. Skip has rebuilt over
18,000 1932 to 1948 coils for both 6 and 12 volts. In over 20 years NO
ONE has paid for a faulty coil, he checks and repairs them at no charge.
The few exceptions are ones that were left on by the ignition switch.
This causes the potting material to melt if the points were closed. He
uses modern high temperature wire and materials that were not
available in the 30's. G.M.

Some people have a need to work on their car, a reason to go to the parts store, a reason to not go on long tours, just around the corner for ice cream, and add to their collection of hard luck awards---- a weak coil can mimic many other problems--- can keep you occupied for days

This is good to hear! I have the 47 - "G" model, 226 - I-6.. C & G advertises a water pump rebuild for the same price as SKIP..

If Skip is given such high ratings, I will send him my business!..

Skip is the go to guy for coil rebuilds, either stock 6 volt or modified 12 volts.
