After Market vs original parts
Looking for advice and experience-
I'm going to rebuild a '36LB engine and am looking for peoples experience and thoughts about using new aftermarket components vs original. Considerations include locating parts, quality of 80 yr old parts vs new parts, cost, and time spent in the machine shop refurbing old parts etc. Parts include: Crankshaft, Cam, Connecting rods, bearings, etc. The valve train would be new either way. Feel free to mention specific brands and your experiences / thoughts. PM me if you would be more comfortable sharing your thoughts privately. |

Re: After Market vs original parts
You will need your machine shop to check out your crankshaft and re use it. If it has already been turned to 20/20 then you will need to find another that is standard or 10/10 at the most. Your machine shop can clean up your cam shaft and you can reuse it if it passes their inspection. Connecting rods can be reconditioned and reused. Engine bearings should not be reused. Buy new or NOS bearings. Pistons and rings I would purchase new. Also you should get new lifters as well. Also get an aluminum timing gear.

Re: After Market vs original parts
NORS parts such as main and rod bearings, valves, guides, and springs from manufacturers such as Toledo Valve, Thompson Products, and Federal Mogul are all high quality and comparable to NOS parts.

New replacement parts where possible, especially rings.
