Some Project Updates
Will be putting the body on the frame Sunday .... I have been working on the underside of the body, undercoating, filling seams. I then moved to the inside working on floor insulation, battery box mount, filling holes. Now I just have to clean up the garage for Sunday! Lol!

Re: Some Project Updates
A little late with these but better late than never. Been pretty busy ever since working on everything to get this baby running and driving. I am really excited about the look of the car - the two tone green has really grown on me, and I am looking forward to the final "look" but so far, it's much better than I ever imagined or planned .....

Thank you - a good amount of slicing and dicing on the firewall to get things in without having to resort to even more drastic measures - good thing I found one that was not complete and pieced it together for this Nailhead/5-speed combo ....

Used Chicago rivets to put the windlace together since no rivets were supplied with them, exhaust baffles and tips installed, need to install my hood strap hold downs, and the car is looking very much like I had envisioned ....

Re: Some Project Updates
You've probably answered this already, maybe in a different thread, but are the rims the same size front to back? What sizes are the tires?
Thanks T |

Re: Some Project Updates
Rears are 4.25” between the rim lips, 4” in front. Front tires are Austones from Universal and are British taxi cab tires, 175/16. Rears are Durvais, 235/85-16. I use bead sealer since all the tires are mounted tubeless and the rims were slightly pitted at the bead. Rims are mid 30s Plymouth artillery wheels 5 on 4.5” pattern.
Here’s a better pic .....

Re: Some Project Updates
Thanks Bob and 36 5-window - thank you! 5th gear is a .72, rear tire is 32” tall and my rear gear is a 3:23. Should put me at around 1800 rpm @ 70. I geared it this way so 3 and 4 are still good for around town. Looking forward to my first road trip to see how she performs ..... a lot different than my flattie roadster, that’s for sure - gotta watch my right foot pressure!!!!!

Re: Some Project Updates
I will TRY and be kind to my rear tires - lol!
Well, I am getting my electrical sorted out and all my lights, signals, accessory stuff - everything works except the horn. Biggest step - I got fire to the starter! Wooo hooo! I am using a horn button for a start button which took so me fancy wiring and although I tested everything before hand, when she kicked over today I got a thrill let me tell you ..... my pics are not Fordbarn friendly but startup in my garage is not far away ...... |

Re: Some Project Updates
This site isn’t the easiest to post videos on jurcI will do my best.
Car is all ready for startup .- just waiting for my buddy to arrive who wants to be there when it happens. She’s got gas, antifreeze and we’ve got our fingers crossed. I worked a whole bunch on my carpeting. Cut new pieces as I learned (the hard way) how not to do it. But it’s looking pretty good now. I used black vinyl to bind it - wasn’t easy working with it but better than regular binding material .... |

Re: Some Project Updates
Thanks Tinker - I had thoughts of painting it black but it’s rare you see a hot rod with a stock/original color combo ....
Getting close to the end of the build - doing interior stuff now. Even though it’s a hot rod I like to have an interior, and let it patina on it’s own. The body came with the original seat with a complete Le Baron Bonney interior installed so I left it that way with just a matter of the floor and kick panels. I am short so I fixed the seat in its back-most position and made it higher. That left room for a tray underneath to hold whatever. Being short also means I can hardly reach stuff in the deepest recesses of the trunk. So, I raised the floor where the 32 dips down in front of the trunk floor hump and behind it. I used canbinet grade 3/4” maple plywood behind the seat and 1/2” birch at the back. I also put a lip on it to keep things from sliding around into the side panels, leaving some of the hump still showing. I just need to put down a thin layer of foam or Insul and the carpet for a completed look .....

Re: Some Project Updates
With all this rain, don't let that Nailhead sit outside with the plugs removed. I made that mistake 50 plus years ago when I put a '57 Buick in my '48 coupe. Put the plugs back in and it wouldn't crank with water in the cylinders. But it did bend a connecting rod. I was too poor then for machine shop work, so I just ran the hell out of it and put up with the vibration. Went through a few axles before I figured out just how hard I could get on it.
Have fun. I will look for you at Shorty's |

Re: Some Project Updates
My rear end leak turned out to be a longer fight than anticipated of which, in the end, I prevailed .... part will be in tomorrow and I hope to have it buttoned up soon .....

Re: Some Project Updates
Car has been on the run and steady for almost 2 weeks - woo hoo! Had one bent front rim that is out being fixed but she’s running great. Went to my buddy jacksandeuces (on the HAMB) and he had a bunch of cars hanging out in his yard, one being a flattie great race car that participated in ‘12. It was a great day to take some pics .....
Not all are everyone’s taste but a nice “car collage”, none-the-less ..... |

Re: Some Project Updates
Tom, you've done an amazing job on this coupe and very cool that you've brought us along from the "frame, on up"!!! Love the old school treatment on the Buick engine...at least I think I'm remembering this right!! A really nice complement to your roadster!!
Dick. P.S. Assume you won an award for this one at the Jalopyrama?? |

Re: Some Project Updates
Have not been on here lately and this was the first post i looked at. You did a great job on that 32 Tom. Looks, stance, engine, and everything is just right. Guess i won't see you tomorrow at the L.A. roadster show. Maybe next year. Have a good weekend, Mark.

Re: Some Project Updates
Dick - thanks for the compliments- I really appreciate it. No, I did not win anything at the Jalopyrama. I was just happy to have been selected to attend!
No, Mark - thanks for your compliments as it was a fun build. No, no LA Roadster show this year for me. Might try next year or the year after and maybe combine it with a couple other events while out there. I will keep you posted ..... |

Re: Some Project Updates
Tom,
Not being critical, but interested in knowing why you chose to install the Top Bow Rest Brackets intended for use on roadsters on your coupe? These are also often referred to as rumble seat “grab handles” (much to the dismay of purists) and are also sometimes seen on coupes equipped with rumble seats, also a point of contention with the purists. I assume your use of them on a coupe with a trunk was solely for aesthetics, much the same as any other trim piece would be? As I said, I kind of like the look of them anyway!! - |

Re: Some Project Updates
I did that because:
1 - plugging the holes would have ruined the paint 2 - the car was originally a rumble seat car 3 - although I did not do the change to a trunk lid, it shows what this body was originally 4 - it makes folks wonder and ask the question you just did! Lol! Lastly, the theme was I found this rolling body and frame and dropped in the drivetrain of what might have been a late 50s early 60s build. That’s my story and I am sticking to it! Lol! Yes, the 5-speed departs from that but I knew I was going to drive the wheels off of it and it’s the only way to go imho - from what I remember as kid back in that time frame, real hot rods had 3 pedals ... Thanks for asking ..... Tom |
