How do you install valve guides?
I am going to be replacing my valves and valve guides. I bought new split valve guides and I wasn't sure how you get them to stay up in the hole.
Can someone enlighten me?

Re: How do you install valve guides?
You hold them in with your fingers if I remember right. Then you install the spring and keeper.

Re: How do you install valve guides?
If you are installing new valves, it would be a good idea to have the seats in the block ground and/or replaced. At a minimum, you need to lap in the new valves.
Fitting the new valves to obtain the proper clearance between the valve stem and the lifter is not much fun and quite time consuming (at least for me). Plus, if you grind a little too much of the stem during the fitting process, you will need to replace it with another new valve and start the process again, or try to grind the seat down to compensate.

Re: How do you install valve guides?
Your guides should fit firmly in the block as you get them into their proper position. Use adjustable lifters to avoid having to grind your valve stems. Read the Ford Service Bulletins for a relatively easy way to set valve clearances.

The spring itself holds them up. You can use the modern valve kit as some have indicated and use the adjustable lifters and it is much easier to obtain proper clearance rather than check and remove material from the end of the valve to gain clearance.... If you use the 1-piece guides you will have to use an air hammer to drive them in with the correct driver pilot. Not too much.... but just enough to make them about flush in the valve port. Re: How do you install valve guides?
OK, so they are just pressed in by hand and they should stay there I am gathering.
Thank you

Re: How do you install valve guides?
Keep each pair of guide halves together.
If you throw them into a mix and match pile, good luck getting a good fit. |
