Remove gas tank from my 37
Hi.. Guys... I am inthe middle of trying to remove the orginal gas tank from my 1937 2 dr humpback Ford with out damageing the filler spout. I have the tank loose from the frame but won't come out due to the left fender in its way. Will I need to remove the rear fender to accomplish its removal? Any suggestions.....? Thanks Mike

The fender does not have to be removed! remove the spout from the tank.

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
The filler spout looks to be a solid one piece with the gas tank. The filler spout about half way down looks to be some sort of a crimped flange so it can not come apart. mike

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
can you get any pics of what you're talking about??...i think what you call a crimped flange is a threaded collar that you can turn to remove the gas spout....threads are on the tank....if you can remove that, the tank should come out pretty easily....Mike

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
Just did this last year on the '37. A pipe wrench or channellocks will be handy. Don't forget to replace the lead washer.

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
The spout is not removeable. If you have and orginal tank and don,t have any thing added like parrell spring. You push tank up to drivers side that should allow the tank on pass side to slide past frame. You can maybe dent right under filler to give more room on tank. Some new afther market tanks are made wrong.
The bottom half is to far to drivers side, makeing it hard to replace. |

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
I am unable to screw out the spout...I almost had it out but the spout is the issue. Looks like I need to fill the tank with water and cut the spout its self. 50 years of working on old cars is not enough I guess. Thanks Guys Mike

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
I couldn't get mine loose either so I cut the fill tube just above the collar and with two of us pulling and prying we managed to get the tank out. Funny thing was with the tank on the ground the tube unscrewed pretty easily. I guess with all the banging around it loosened.

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
You use a spanner wrench in the knotches to remove the sleeve. Like our Uncle said make sure you use or replace the lead washer between the flanges. I dip the washer in gas tank sealant to seal it good. G.M.

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
The 37 tank seems to be an animal of its own with the spout facing forward. Later cars had the spout coming straight out of the tank and will no work for a 37. Both versions of the 37 tank had that forward leaning spout.

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
Well.... There is no screw on flanges....only a one peice factory crimped on solid from tank to filler cap (not included). Boy this was ugly ..but i got it off.
The only way to remove the tank without damageing it was to lift off the body to clear the long filler tube...even the inner fender was a problem due to the tubes length. There were no clamps nor a rubber spanner nor screw on flanges on this bad boy. I am sure it was made from factory that way. Mike :>( |

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
This is something I have to do too. I have an early production 1937 Ford with the threaded collar type fuel filler neck. I am going to try to get it off with the spanner. Every few days I have been hitting the neck and threaded collar with penetrating oil. I hope I can get it off without damaging the filler neck, but I can see that some have succeeded and some have failed. Probably going to tackle this next month sometime.

Re: Remove gas tank from my 37
Tony you are right..... there are threads from the filler tube to the tank. I do not see how there would be enough room to unscrew the tube from the tank in the rear wheel well. any ways it out the hard way. Thanks guys its been a education for this old fart. Mike
