Horn rod repair

Not to hijack, but to explain why I'm interested. I just got a repro '36 steering wheel for my '35. The original wheel is cracked to heck. Might have it repaired but the repro is going on, I won't say soon, but it's going on.

As long has I have to get the horn rod out (Fordor, eek, it was easy on the Phaeton) I have to get to the bottom of the horn situation, which is to say they haven't worked since I got the car fifteen months ago.

Thanks VT, feel free to add to this .The 2" section I needed we made up in the old lath , made a section of a about 1/2" to go down in the tube .Then added two ears and a collar to locate in the light switch, After that then held it in a piece of angle iron to align it then brazed it in .

I was surprised when the wire pulled out with the rivet contact on the lower end .We fitted a new wire and left it proud then taped it up and filled it with epoxy, Moke up some photos were missing ,

Sorry some of the photos are not to clear . To solder the wire at the top horn contact we removed it first then drilled and counter drilled from the top down through the rivet /contact ,and pulled the wire up then soldered it ,We used the panel vice grip to crimp the horn ring ,Ted

Jeff, don;t trash that original 35 wheel, they are scarce.. The repop is based off of the 36 wheel.

Hi Michael, Ohhh yeah, I hear you loud and clear. I know the '35 wheel is something to protect when it comes off the car. This one is cracked in many places. I've been using it for over a year and really don't want it to get any worse than it already is. There are faint indicators of about six or eight of the raised bumps visible, but you can't feel them. It's wierd.

And yeah again, I'm not so sure I love this replacement wheel which the papers seem to identify as a Mac's product. It is the wrong thing, but it will do its job when time comes. And only about ten people on earth would even notice it being '36. Sadly we're two of the ten. And your Dad would have spotted it from forty yards even with his eyes!

I've gotta do an engine swap, and tranny rebuild, so maybe the steering can happen around that time too, the box is very happy to leak whatever I put in it, and the horns...

I'm chipping away at it. As always, thanks for your helpful comments.

Yes MAC's is the only manufacturer of the 36 wheel. Should have called could have sold you one less than they retail.

The MAc's wheels work fine. On my 35 2 door, I used a mac's wheel, and epoxy'd stainless wire at the exact location of the original "bumps" before painting.. Looks like a NOS 35 wheel now..


Not intending on stealing a thread Ted horn rod repair looks good! tough job.. I attempted once and failed miserably.
