Default Silly Starter Install Question

I reinstalled the starter today but am uncertain if I did it correct. Les Andrew's book is a little vague. Is it correct that the bendix drive gear) is in back of the ring gear and is moved forward (towards the ring gear and radiator) when you press the starter? Does anyone have an illustration on how this assembly is done? Thanks
