Default 64 Ford Galaxie 289 carburetor sizing

Looking for recommendation on a carburetor / CFM and which to choose, Edelbrock or Holley.

The 289 I have is an unknown since it has aftermarket aluminum intake manifold and headers. It has the original cast iron exhaust manifolds. I was told the cam is slightly modified. The original owner has passed away and the family has no engine info other than above.

The headers have only a raw casting number. The engine came with a Edelbrock 1505 carb that was a beat up piece of junk.

Compression is 165-170 across all cylinders. Finally completed leak down testing with all cylinders in the 10-12% range

A Holley 390 cfm or Edelbrock Performer #1404 (500 cfm) would be just the ticket. Both have vacuum operated secondaries so no worries about over carbing it. Bear in mind that any non-stock carb will need a little tweaking. An Autolite with 1.08 venturies would also be a good choice if you can find one; they don't make 'em anymore.

Summit has a carburetor similar to the Ford 4100. The model no. is M2008 $330.

If you go with a vaccum secondary carb you could go anywhere from a 500 CFM up to a 650 CFM. Pick your favorite manufacturer.

I'm a Holley guy all the way. Easy to tune, good clean across the RPM range operation and easy to build if issues crop up. Just remember, with a Holley, cleanliness is Godliness, they don't like ANY junk at all! I would shoot for 400 - 500 CFM, vacuum secondary's, automatic choke..

Be advised the SUMMIT CARB s an off-shore copy/re-design of the HOLLEY 4010/4011. HOLLEY stopped the 4010 production and supposedly scrapped tooling. The rights were then sold later. This is a re-design of the original HOLLY.

The Summit carb is also cost reduced with things like self tapping cover screws etc. They didn't really pass on the savings though.
If it were mine I would buy a used Autolie (Motorcraft) 4100 and rebuild it. Either a 1.08 or 1.12 venturi. Both will work since they are vacuum secondary, and the secondaries open on demand.

Early review (2003) of SUMMIT 4010 copy-

https://www.fordmuscleforums.com/thr...d-test.482814/

Also have to be careful of the CHI-COM 2100-2150 copy carbs available on Ebay.

The HOLLEY 4010 was a design compilation of the FORD 4100 (HOLLEY) and the HOLLEY 4150/4160. It had integral fuel bowls which prevented leaking bowls. The floats were adjustable from outside the carb unlike the 4100 which had to have wet float settings done with top cover off and engine running.

There were some design flaws on the 4010/4011 but I cannot remember what they were. They really didn't catch on though IMO would make a perfect street carb.

I would probably consider a 1850-1 Holley as they have the throttle linkage that will look correct on your car. Good basic 600 CFM carb. you may want to jet primary's down slightly depending on your altitude. And very easy to tune. As stated earlier use a good fuel filter. Holley's do not like dirt.

This video explains the problem(s) with the 4010 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7YkfGitmME

I remember now. When this carb style was introduced, HOLLEY had moved assembly to MECHICO and lost quality control.

Don't know why the guy couldn't turn off the radio. Didn't sound like George Jones to me ...
