Exhaust Manifold Gasket
I need to replace the gasket between the driver's side exhaust manifold and the down pipe. In searching the vendors, I don't see anyone that sells just that gasket. However, I see Mac VP sells a set of 8 exhaust manifold gaskets. Is that because the gasket in question is the same as the ones between the manifold and the block? (i.e., 6 to go between the manifolds and block and 1 each side between the manifold and down pipe)
I don't mind ordering a set of 8 to get the one I need because the price is cheap; I just want to make sure I get the one I need.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Gasket
They are the same on my '35's. It takes eight of the same gasket to do the complete exhaust on mine. Six between the exhaust manifolds and block, one at the crossover pipe to exhaust manifold, and one at the exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Gasket
Thank you both, gentlemen. It's unanimous.
As long as I'm on the subject, would you use any gasket sealant at that location?

Re: Exhaust Manifold Gasket
Not sure this is the best advice to give, but the last time I replace all eight of those exhaust gaskets on my '35 fordor, I decided to coat all the threads on the exhaust manifold bolts with an anti-sieze compound, and as I did that I applied a light coating of anti-sieze to both sides of all eight gaskets. I torqued, and re-torqued those bolts a couple times and have had no exhaust leaks since then. I am slso hoping those gaskets will be easy to remove when the time comes to do that again.

Re: Exhaust Manifold Gasket
A year ago I put on a complete Waldrons exhaust system on my 37, nice fit, no leaks. All eight gaskets are the same, and like JM 35 said antiseeze on the threads. It's a dual exh. system with original style mufflers, just because I think two pipes are nicer looking than one.
It must breath a little better too? One thing that surprised me was that the left side of the frame was already drilled for all the hangers. I've owned it 40 years and it was single exh. I believe all it's life. |

Re: Exhaust Manifold Gasket
Anti seize lubes the threads for a tighter thread connection and it also prevents fretting corrosion to a certain degree. The stuff is a must if you use any corrosion resistant steel hardware especially in high temperature environments. I use the nickle and silver base stuff for most things and definitely on the turbine engine hardware. If a person doesn't, the threads will gall.
