Default Coolant

Hi all. I am going to drain my coolant [water] in my '28 for the winter. If I drain via the petcock on the lower hose steel tube will I safely drain all with no chance of leaving residual water to freeze? Thanks, Frank.

It'll drain the system just fine, just poke a straw/wire or something into the petcock hole after it stops draining to make sure it isn't plugged. I run antifreeze in mine so number one it keeps the corrosion down and number two, don't have to drain it in the fall.

Thanks Eagle. My system is a bit leaky so I have been running water and WP lube.

I've never tried it but Water Glass (Sodium Silicate) is supposed to seal up the system without causing reduced efficiency or plugging of already compromised 80+ year old system. Mine is nice and clean yet and cools great on 50/50 mix.

What antifreeze do you use, Eagle, in your 50/50 mix?

I get it from Napa. The parts guy at our local store is an old car guru and he told me which brand/type to use. Didn't even look at what kind it is as I've known him my whole life and trust he knows what he's talking about. So basically, I have no idea!

Previously on the Barn Thought I read to stay away from Antifreeze with silicates, stay with the Green antifreeze.

Is the additive above safe, it has Silicate?

Store/fill with 50/50 green antifreeze, drain and save it in the spring for multiple winter storages. Helps keep rust/corrosion from happening during the winter due to condensation and no worries about freezing.

Make sure to use the green antifreeze.

Lots of good ideas here .... thanks Fella's. Glad to know that there would not be any coolant hiding low in the block .....
