Default 31 A brake light issue. Help please

So I have a 31 A that i keep up for the family since my grandfathers passing. I notices the brake lights were not working. So I bought a new brake switch and got some bulbs just incase. I hooked up the wires and immediately the brake light turned on. I had not yet bolted the switch in. So I do not know why they were on. I also noticed that if I press the switch they turn off. Calm me crazy but shouldnt they be off to start with and then turn off when the switch is pressed in? Any help would be appreciated.

Its a normally closed switch so like Bob said, its working correctly. Once you install it you'll see how it works.

so you are saying once it is bolted on the light will turn off? And then come on when the pedal is pressed? I will bolt it on tonight.

I need a picture of the 1931 Stop light switch bolted to the frame cross member.
I'm running 1940 hydraulics and the pressure switch failed early, so I thought I
would try the proper mechanical switch.
