Oversize brake rivets?
The brake shoes on my '31 coupe have worn holes for the rivets, 0.166 inch. But the only brass rivets I can find are 0.142 inch shaft diameter.
Does anyone make an oversize rivet with the proper head diameter, approx 9/32 inch? thanks |

Weld up the holes n the shoe and re-drill.

Also remember that new brake shoes are $20-$30 each, so consider the value of your time.

Re: Oversize brake rivets?
I have been doing this for many years without any issues.
The rivet holes in the brake shoes do not need to be precision fits to the rivets. To fill oversize holes, I use pop-rivets. Clean-out the holes in the shoes to the nearest pop-rivet diameter, and increase the C-bore diameter in the brake lining.

I am not saying that Pop-Rivets are a bad idea however there are a couple of things that needs to be considered no matter which rivet is used. The head of the rivet needs to be the same diameter as the recessed area of the lining The hole in the brake shoe needs to be the same size as the shank of the rivet. This is a safety item. Allowing the lining to have any potential movement sets up the potential for the lining to shear the rivets during braking. In a panic braking scenario, tremendous rotational force is placed on the linings. Should a lining become loose from the shoe during quick or sudden braking, this can allow braking force to be suddenly & significantly changed including causing the vehicle to change directions as one brake is no longer applying an equal opposite force. Also, should a shoe lining become loose and become wedged as the drum is rotating, it could lock the drum/wheel/tire up unexpectantly potentially causing loss of control. Think thru any modification like this. |

Re: Oversize brake rivets?
I have tons of brass brake rivets in various sizes. Give me the diameter of the head you need and the diameter of the shank and I'll see what I can do...

That sounds like a good deal. I dont know the size, other than they were large, but I got some rivets and the oversized rivet gun from LMC trucks.
