34 Speedometer Cable
When I start from a dead stop to moving my speedometer fluctuates from 0 to 90 mph, bounces sporadicly until I hit a constant speed then it levels out.
Ive always heard to grease the cable and it will fix everything. I see the cable behind the dash...what should I do? Anybody done it before? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by dbtenner; 05-11-2019 at 12:07 PM. |

Re: 34 Speedometer Cable
lube the cable,-- discconect from back of speedometer and pull out the inner cable and lube with proper lube, graphite, cable grease, etc, put back into outer sheath and turn until it re-engages drive on trans, re attach to speedometer

Re: 34 Speedometer Cable
You can remove the inner cable and clean and lube it but if it were me I would just replace it as they are not too expensive.

So I pulled out the cable. This inner rod/cable is what needs to be greased, right? Its small. Do I need to do anything at the transmission? Does it have the some rod I need to disconnect a grease? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: 34 Speedometer Cable
because i am sort of a hillbilly, i just squirt some oil in the end you have off. to do it correct, you should unscrew the end on the tranny too so there are no sharp turns, then the inner cable will slide out to be greased with real speedo grease from the auto store

opps! well, all true David, not the tranny, but 'down there some where, ya know where the other end hooks up! sometimes it is easier to get the key back in the turtle/drive when its disconnected. i find, any way.

Am I suppose to use the cable grease at the small rod end only? Not an oil that drips down the entire length of the cable, right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: 34 Speedometer Cable
pull the whole inner cable out, and schmooze grease all over the whole length of it

Re: 34 Speedometer Cable
And if the problem persists have the speedo serviced as the lubricant dries out over the yrs.

Re: 34 Speedometer Cable
I greased the cable and reinstalled the inner cable and seems to do the same until I go a constant speed, then it levels out.
Whom would I contact about servicing the speedo? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: 34 Speedometer Cable
If you remove the speedometer there is a very small cup on the back near the area where the speedometer cable gets connected remove the cup by prying it out. Add several drops of gun oil and reinstall the cup and the speedometer.
