Making your own vinyl/rubber floor?

Looking to cover up an unsightly part of our truck’s floor that covered in overspray (outlined in white). Has anyone custom cut any rubber or vinyl product for something like this? The pre-cut stuff is expensive and I’m not sure it will fit ok.

Vehicle is an open cab ‘42 body style fire truck.

Both Homedepot an Lowes have black rubber floor matting in rolls. The stuff is about 1/16" thick. I believe the roll was 48" wide. It was sold by the linear foot.

Thanks guys! What the best way to secure it? I was thinking self tapping sheet metal screws and a washer.

Most parts houses carry a bed liner material that is applied with a small roller.An old sweat sock will work too. Use the fuzzy side and dab it on to create a texture.

I like that idea. We have some in a spray can already but I hate spray painting something like that. Thanks!

I've used a roll on bed liner in floor boards before on my old Jeep. Works great as long as the floors are roughed up a little and then cleaned really well. Don't get that bed liner stuff on your hands though. It does not come off.

If you get a thicker type rubber mat it shouldn't really be an issue moving around, but a good idea. Weight will keep it in place. Probably could try some 3m double sided trim tape also.


As a side note... I believe dennis carpenter sells a very nice mat for the the 40s cabs. What I have in my 38. Not as cost efficient as a rubber slab and may take a bit of time for delivery. But they are super nice mats with all the right molded designs.


Certainly if you get a thicker rubber material it'll work very nicely without added grip.

I did some measuring and pondering today. I think the bed liner will work best. There are some more expensive ones that you can tint but for now I think I will use the Herculiner red (provided I can find it).

Be aware Herculiner is very coarse. It's like coating your floor with a grinding disk.

You may want to scuff off any loose paint or over spray.The bedliner will only stick as good as what's under it. Good luck.

you will have a hard time cleaning the floor when its grinder disk-like surface i would guess. i would rather a loose rubber mat you can remove and sweep it out. just my thoughts.

I was at the hardware store today and for $12 I was able to get some vinyl mat off a roll. I’m most of the way though installing it, I will post a pic later.

The permanence of the truck bed coating is what stopped me. I decided to clean it up a bit until I can get a color matched spray to repaint the floor. I’m trying to keep our truck as true to its form as possible yet still look good.
