very early, early and mid-28 steering box number

About a month ago, an early steering was found with what could be a serial
stamped on it. Two weeks ago another one was found. These are BOTH 2nd.
style columns for "no bale" or "open bale" type light switches. First style with
the small square Pittman arm shafts AND the third style WITH a bale are
included in this question. The numbers found are "15346" and "26040".

The numbers would be found at the BASE of the column on the TOP were the
4 bolts hold the lower bearing too the box.

These could be serial OR quality control numbers that Ford would use,..similar
to the "torque tube numbers".

It only takes a minute to check your 7 tooth columns. Do you have any with
numbers stamped on them?

The very early steering gear in my A1276, this is the steering that was in the chassis, has the numbers 25608 ,only in reverse of the numbers shown in your picture.
Another very early steering gear I have has no numbers stamped on it.

I should have add this information...

There are only two "steering gear housing" (that I know of)..

1. The early style with the weld down the center,top and bottom,...the weld is about
10" long.
2. The 2nd. style with NO weld..

You can rebuild either style too make an early or later column,...so you need to look
at what you have....so please look for the numbers and if early or late.

I just checked my 9-27-28 Phaeton and two more 7 tooth, and all 3 have the welded seam and no numbers.

The weld on all of mine is up and down the main steering box part, so it would run through your grease zerk.

I just came across a 4th one, which is different from my other 3. This one has no weld seem, has 2 grease fittings, and no numbers. It's probably the same as the one in #7, if that one has 2 grease fittings.

February 14 1928 2 door sedan number 24981 steering column number 14678. There is no weld seam, one grease fitting on the top. Light switch rod engraved "on-off-dim". No bail or drain hole with knurled cover. The education never stops on these early Fords seems the list of early features is never ending.

It's interesting that the steering box, on such an early car, with all the early
features, doesn't have a weld seem. Maybe someone ground / filled the seem
to make it look nicer.
Hopefully the new revision will have a date on the change from the 2 piece
too the one piece steering box. I do have a call into a Senior Judging Standards
member with the question

The 2 door sedan number 24981 is a original car that was not run for 57 years when I bought it. The early parts were all there I even have the original interior with only a small wear spot in the front carpet. I didn't have to do anything to the steering column original wiring still working great .This car is a time capsule of how early Fords were put together.

I have one on my Sports Coupe * A17188 * It has a number in 14540 on same place , and no welding.. It is the orig sterring , I can not post a picture.. I will try to send a mail to D.J Moordigian with 2 pic.

This information is not for me,..it will sometime, maybe be, in the next revision, for the
"Restoration and Guidelines and Judging Standards", IF more information is brought
forth.

They are now asking for photos of the welds and how they were finished. This would be
for the steering box with only one(1) grease fitting on top of the box.
