Cleaning Underside of Car ?

Oil and grease on the underside of my Tudor. Besides a steam cleaning, any ideas for a way to clean for a homeowner ?

My preferred method is scrape off the heavy stuff with a putty knife, then spray with Gunk Engine Brite. Let soak, then rinse off. The dollar store or Walmart are the cheaper places to buy it.

Just for fun I bought some lawn spray at Walmart, and then bought some from a gardening store. Of course Walmart was cheaper. But on closer inspection I found that the stock number for the Walmart product was exactly the same except for a suffix at the end of the stock number. It was "WMS". I contacted the company to inquire about the reason for the "WMS" on the Walmart item. The bottles looked exactly alike, same amount, same wording, everything. Everything except that "WMS". After some rather extended questioning, the representative finally admitted that the bottle with the "WMS" was a special run, just for Walmart. He would not admit to any differences, but I think most will be able to draw some conclusions as to why Walmart stuff is cheaper.

Mine was reasonably clean three years ago when we bought the car, However, in my restoration with the body suspended over the chassis, I had an opportunity to clean it a lot better and paint. I used everything from 409 to brake cleaner, depending on the need. I can tell you that it was a Hell of a lot of elbow grease and several afternoons on my back under the car and hunched over with the floorboards off and the body up in the air.

I'm not going to speculate as to the difference in Wally world lawn spray, but after using Gunk for years, I can attest that it works the same wether purchased at Family Dollar, Walmart, or for double the money at any big name parts store.

I think you may not want to spend any money, but at our shop when we get one like this we pick up the front with the wrecker (wheel lift) to about a 45* angle and pressure wash the underneath. Doing what you seem to want to do at home I can't help you with.

I cleaned the undersides of two unrestored cars the hard way, on my back with a dull putty knife and wire brush.
31 Coupe was then sprayed with ospho and then with satin Rustoleum.
37 Plymouth was brush coated with used gear oil.
I was happy with both results but did not enjoy the processes.
Later I got a vehicle lift and wished I had it sooner.
If you don't have the budget for a lift, try to make friends with someone who does, the process will be much easier.
We no longer have the vehicle lift and our 35 Chevy needs the underside cleaned- not looking forward to it.
