Default Battery Ground Strap Length

I have a stock '31 A. Where can I get a long ground strap? I'm looking for a strap that's long enough to go from a transmission cover bolt to the battery terminal. The one I have now is a braided strap that's about 13" long.

I checked some of the model a vendors and most of their straps are 7 3/4". Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I usually use the standard frame ground point and strap. I then run a smaller 12 volt sized cable from the point on the frame where the ground attaches to a bolt near the starter. I think the cable designed for 12 volts is large enough since is is not carrying the full current.

I have several ground wires. The frame mount is riveted to the side frames and can have rust in the rivet area. I also run a line from the generator to the frame . I have the original line from the block to the frame.

O'Reilly, and I'm sure many others, have 0 gauge cable and ends to make a cable any length you want. That's a cable, not a braided strap. I used the original style strap from the battery to the frame cross-member, and made up a cable at O'Reilly's to go from the same bolt on the cross-member to the transmission cap. I think I made it 13" long, but mine wound up being about 1" too long. The only problem is crimping the ends onto the cable without crimping pliers that large.

I wired my battery shut off ( usual part supplier style) so that the shut off is operated on the Positive terminal, not the hot negative. That required me to us a 25" cable that matched the same material insulation that is used on the 31 Fords, ie, not red or black vinyl or some other "modern" looking cable. I used a NROS cable from a '49 Pontiac six. It is the same length needed to ground the cable on the frame and looks period correct. Sold at California Pontiac Restoration. excellent quality and same gauge as our As , and way cheaper then a custom built Y&Z cable.

any welding shop can make up a correct guage cable and they have the equipment to properly crimp the ends. You'll want a 0/0 or a 1/0 guage cable for best connections.

I just used a 12v cable that I got at NAPA that had an eyelet on both ends. Just ran it from the frame where the braided strap was bolted to a bolt on the transmission.

Take a magnet with you when you go to look at pre made battery cables, some have steel terminal ends crimped on----they go bad quick and get bad wire strand to steel terminal connection problems
