Default 1934 Ford firewall toolbox

Who has installed a Dunford toolbox on the firewall of your restored 33 or 34 Ford? Hi Glad you did or do you find it takes away from the engine compartment? How rare and desirable is this approved accessory?

Given that it was not released by Ford as an authorized accessory, its presence would result in a point(s) deduction in concourse judging at a V8 Club national meet, notwithstanding its obvious utility.

I've seen a couple of these installed and while they are interesting, I think they really detract from an otherwise attractive engine compartment. And, like Dave states, it's not an authorized accessory and will be cause for a point deduction.
My vote? Thumbs down.

Drilling holes in the firewall would be a "no, no" for me. It also has the potential for water leaks if not sealed properly.

If you travel in your 33 /34 its a great period accessory, and where else can you store some essential spares. our 33 has one but our 34 has not.

I too have one mounted in my 35. Sure, one needs to drill holes in the firewall to mount it, but one also needs to drill holes in firewall to mount a radio box and/or original Columbia controls, heater etc. At car shows etc, when I open the hood to display the engine compartment, very, very few people pick up on the toolbox.

That Dunford toolbox that you show looks awfully like the Accessory Tool Boxes that were available on Australian 1933 and 1934 Fords. The above picture shows the one fitted to my 1934 Ford. I took this photo when I had to replace the Radiator.

Mate Kpar had one made by the local sheet metal expert, one VERY nice job, look on his posts you will see a pic of it.
and another bonus when fitted to the 33 the lid acts as a bonnet (hood) rerst.

Just a point to remember - you will have to modify the lid if you have a side mount spare tyre or you won't be able get into the box. Dave

Great comments. Thank you. Sounds like these are fairly few and far between.

As Dave pointed out, the Lid has to be shorter when you have a fender mounted spare wheel, otherwise you cannot put the lid on or take it off. In this case, the lid is cut and you can see the small fixed part of the lid, and the now shorter movable part. With the shorter lid, it is easy to remove and reinstall when your car is fitted with the side mounted spare. This tool box has been on this car from new, and is a genuine accessory on Australian 1933 and 1934 Fords.

This is the problem that Dave pointed out when you have a side mounted spare wheel. I only fitted this Tool Box to this car when I planned on a long drive. They hold a lot of small spare parts and tools. After attaching it to the cowl, I discovered that I could not add the lid. Obviously, this Tool Box was originally fitted to a car with no side mounted spare. I wasn't prepared to cut this lid, so the solution was to remove the wheel, add the Lid, then reinstall the wheel. With a little bit of effort, I can reach everything that I have stored inside it.

The Dunford tool box used straps located in the two corners that bolted to existing screws in the firewall, so they did not require drilling. See attached crude representation to show area of straps. There is one strap on each side.

Here is a larger picture of the Dunford Tool Box as posted by Frank West.
The Australian Tool Boxes have 4 holes that are drilled in the Cowl, and a Wooden Spacer fits between the Toll Box and the Cowl.

To mount the Australian Accessory 1933-1934 Ford Tool Box, you must drill holes in the Cowl, as shown in above illustration.
The next picture shows the Wooden Blocks that the Tool Box sites on, while the last picture shows the underside of the Tool Box showing the holes.

Here is an ad from 1933 describing the Dunford Tool Box. Only two connections mare required with the use of existing Ford Bolts.
