Default 55 8" rear end crush sleeve dimensions

Do any of you know what the length and dia. of the crush sleeve for an 8" rear end is , I'm having a hard time finding one. I can machine one if I had the dimensions for it. waiting on supplier to get back with me, they are supposed to have 2 in stock, but I've heard that story before. Maybe one of you have a spare one you would part with, any info. appreciated. Al

I'm sorry. I meant that for seeing if Larry's actually had one in stock.

I don't know how you would fabricate one as they are designed to crush with the specified pinion retaining nut torque and give the correct specs once the torque is applied.

A solid spacer was used on HP rears (9" racing) but you would have to do a lot of ciphering for the correct end result.

BTW- The first PN was the FORD P&A to hopefully help in your search.

Have done a Hemming search and none are listed, looks like I'll do some cifering. Bearings second try on them are supposed to be here tomorrow. Then I'll cipher some. Still looking at that chain link fence post. Al

I'm confused. You say its a 55 Ford rear end, or is it an eight inch? They are two different axles.

My understanding it is a FORD design rear (removable carrier) (1955) The only way a DANA would come through was in a wagon or P-CODE sedan.

I found a crush sleeve from Yukon Gear and Axle that might work, It's longer than mine and looks like it will fit over the pinion shaft. Look at their part # Y5PCS-22 and see what you think. I've placed an order for 2, if first you don't suck seed suck again. Waitin on parts, may be in today. Got a lead on an 8.8 rear locally and calling him back to see what he really has. Al

The 55 rear will work fine in a stock car. A new crush sleeve should be longer than the one you have, it has not yet been crushed. If you have good bearings, put in new lube and run it. If you find bad bearings and can find no one to help repair yours, an 8.8 from a 1990 Ranger Super Cab is the correct width, but will need the spring pads removed and new ones welded on the bottom. Then be sure to straighten tha housing after the welding.

I've used crush sleeves to get the set up dimension for the solid type sleeves before but they are usually a soft material and not designed to be left in for service. I've used the soft steel ones too on GM & Ford 9-inch rear axle pinions. The Dana axles that I'm more familiar with use shims with a sleeve. I don't have enough experience with the older removable 3rd member type but they don't have much parts support anymore. This is the kind of stuff that Stacy Brown used to have before he finally sold out.

If you find some thin wall steel tubing the correct diameter, you will need one that is a bit longer than the one you removed so that it has some crush to it but not too much. That one for a 12-bolt GM truck is long enough but I don't know if the diameter will work. The shaft size is listed at 1.438".

I have checked every lead tha you guy's have given me and they don't exist. Had more problems with bearing's from Mac's found what I need at C&G good people to work with. I ordered 2 crush sleeves just in case I mess the first on up. If I can make it work I'll let you know. Al

Old Don it is a 55 Ford rear end, and it is an 8" by ring gear meaurement. The passenger car is different from the sedan delivery and station wagon, and it's a PITA to get parts for. I am looking for an 8.8" to replace it with, if I trash it. Back in 59 I I drag raced my 55 Club sedan and never had a problem with the rear end, but that was with a 272 ci engine, my 302 has lots more power than the 272 with 2 bbl carb. Al

Al,

Watch this video - https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...5ABD&FORM=VIRE

You might check with Fred at Southside Obsolete up in Faribault, MN or barnfind08 here on the Barn. He mostly deals with the earlier cars up to 1948 but he has a lot of stuff and may still have some good contacts if he can't help.

I'd just fabricate a hard bushing and grind or add shims to get the pre-load. It might take a while but its a way to proceed. If you put the bearings in without the pinion and find a way to measure between the bearing inner races, you can get a close figure for a starting point and go from there.
