Camshaft nut
What is the best way to hold the camshaft to put 100lbs torque on the nut that holds the timing gear?

Re: Camshaft nut
With 2 to 1 gear reduction, Marla held it from turning with the hand crank while Dave tightened it to 100 ft. lbs!!
( Now he's AFRAID to get her ticked off about ANYTHING!) Bill W.

Re: Camshaft nut
I do it with the cam in the vice with soft jaws before I install the cam.

Re: Camshaft nut
Put my new $420.00 Stipe cam in a soft jawed vise ? I don't think so.....and I do not think the rag between the gears would help he teeth on my new aluminum gear either....

Re: Camshaft nut

Re: Camshaft nut
I've done it with the fiber gear and no damage to the gear teeth.

Re: Camshaft nut
I talked to Bill Stipe and he refered me to a machine shop that does this kind of work. Ron said he installs the cam in the engine, holds the crank from turning and then torques the nut. It sounds alot like Bills method. Thanks all, JB

Re: Camshaft nut
I do as Lawrie does, in a vise with copper jaws. I use an impact wrench to tighten the nut. I grasp the cam by the front bearing. The cam is made of very good steel, don't worry about harming it.

Make that three, I put the cam in a vise also. No rag between the teeth for me. If I change the fiber gear on the car,I take off the side cover and put a clamp across the gear. |
