Default vinyl top on Tudor sedan

geting ready to replase the roof on my 30 tudor and i'm not sure if the foam padding should stop at the opening of the roof where the side rails for the bows or go all the way to where the vinyl ends where the rain gutters go?

thanks

Scott

Mitch, is that black material in your picture foam or is that the muslin sheeting? i ran the sheeting to the iner roof opening, but i was woried that the foam would be to wavy and puckered up from the nails. and after the vinyl is placed over it, the outline of the roof opening would show through. so that's why i was thinking that it ran all the way down to the gutters.

Scott
It's the denim that comes in the LB kit
The padding is not thick which also came in the kit

Yes
I pull the vinyl tight and pin tack it with 1" temp brads. ( just barely driving them in )Then after a day or two I remove sections of the temp tacks and pull the vinyl tighter then final tack using the shorter proper brads

I just finished installing a new roof on my late 31 tudor. Marco's tutorial was extremely helpful. Mine don't look as good as his, but is far better than if I had not had his instructions to follow. Thanks Marco.

I prefer cotton to the foam, as foam will break down with age and heat. I saw a couple roofs that had a very puffy look because someone used padding that was too thick.

Agree it's not foam, that will look terrible
Cotton padding is supplied with the LB kit

Do ya all trim the vinyl before or after installing the track strips for the trim and drip rail?

Trim before the gutters are installed, otherwise you'll see the vinyl and screw the paint job up

Tom answered that in post #14... It won't compress or compress evenly so you will have unevenness especially over the roof bows and side areas where there is not the same give as the center areas where there is just chicken wire

Notice how so many of the newer cars have headliners that detach from the board and fall down since cars stopped using metal bows to hold the headliners in place. At first I thought it was due to poor glue, but after looking at them I see it is the foam had deteriorated and separated.

I'd stick with cotton for the top padding, and horsehair and other materials for seat padding. I think the best use for foam is for packing when you mail glassware.
